Famitsu Gives Smash Bros. Brawl a Perfect Score

Massive one-player mode, Final Smashes make this one a keeper.

Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu has awarded its seventh perfect score (four 10s, for a 40/40) in the publication's history to Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The reviewers universally rave about the game:
"This time around even the 1P mode is massive. Adventure Mode will entertain you for quite a long time, and the story's presentation is excellent. In versus mode, the Final Smashes add more uncertainty to battles; you can have a wilder match than ever regardless of skill. Hats off to the ample control and sound options as well."

"Final Smashes-one of the new elements to the game-dazzle, exhilarate, and heat up the battles more than ever. The content-rich 1P mode is aces, too. Movies and action in 'Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary' move at a good clip; I completely lost track of the time. Loved it!"

"Compelling presentation and gimmicks, plus dynamic and subtle character motions. You have GOT to see these over-the-top Final Smashes. Lots of versus stages, and the 1P mode is very fulfilling. A stage editor and the ability to browse detailed game data are also pluses."

"The all-stars in this roundup bound across the screen with polish. The game comes complete with a mode that will suck you in even if you're by yourself, and more than enough hooks to stir up the collector within you. This is a supreme game that oozes superior technology, sensibility, and effort. Each play yields new discoveries, and each versus battle offers welcome doses of joy and dismay."

Brawl may be coming a little later than usual, but this one looks to be well worth the extra wait.

This Game will unleash a pwnage so great even a 40 can't hold its greatness. people Famitsu is one of the hardest judging critics out there, and they might be giving 40s out lately because just maybe they are good games. And people they are Japanese, They don't cry about everything we do. Seriously everybody already is going to buy this game if they can, and if you don't want to then you sir are very stupid (unless you are getting it free). And why would Nintendo pay them, Nintendo does what they want and they don't need a mag to sell Brawl which is the most anticipated game of the year

Shonuff27 said: "Also keep in mind that this is a Japanese Mag. Japanese are not as harsh when it comes to reviews" @Shonuff27 - Maybe the Japanese in general, but not Famitsu, which has given out fewer perfect scores than EGM has. EGM also gave this game a perfect score.

By the way guys this is a Preview, though I am curious how they get a game that is so-called unfinished but Japan DOES get it by the 31st of Jan 08 Hmmm. Also keep in mind that this is a Japanese Mag. Japanese are not as harsh when it comes to reviews because of their culture and upbringing is not too spoiled on graphics as we are. So i'd take it with a grain of salt. And though it sounds cliche' I don't think Nintendo would stoop low enough to pay people to talk good about their games. Nintendo's not Hilary Clinton :P

  • Wait...

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  DJ_Sessum!
If they're reviewing it already, why do we have to wait an extra month? Since they already show screenshots of the English version on Dojo, it shouldn't take too long to translate. Well, whatever the cause, this WILL be the last delay and in the end, the wait will be worth it. Keep up the good work Nintendo!

  • I think it deserves it

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  The8bit
Though I haven't played the game yet, I've been following the announcements on Dojo pretty closely. Melee is one of my favorite games of all time, and this project seems to be one of Nintendo's largest efforts of all time. Hell they're hyping this game more than they have ever hyped a Mario or Zelda game. And this is only the 7th perfect score EVER in Famitsu's history. It's not like they throw those scores around lightly.

That Famitsu has been giving out a lot of 10s lately. I am a big believer in the fact that no game is perfect so to me famitsu's 10s are starting to lose their value a little.

1up is not the site hinting that Nintendo paid off Famitsu. I was reading the same story somewhere else and got the 2 mixed up. Non the less, same thing, kids posting in that site as if Nintendo paid Famitsu off.
  • J_Stern
  • It's amazing

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  J_Stern
Words are amazing. 1up casually speculates that Nintendo is paying off publications in order to get a perfect score, and then that dominates the message board, as if it were fact. And on other sites they just reports that the game got a perfect score, and that's the topic of the message board. I re read it, and I think they took it off. In a way it's irrisponsible, it's like if I like a girl, but she likes some other guy, so to better my chances I casually tell a couple of people she knows that the guy has herpes, or something like that. Eventually they'll tell her and she'll start having some serious doubts about him.

  • Wow! I honestly am skeptical at this point...

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  TEH_BANNED_REBEL
On one side, i have ALWAYS followed famitsu as the BEST game rating service available. But on the other, i cant help but think maybe there losing their touch. FFXII got a perfect score, and i dont know a single person who actually BEAT the game. It was fun, but its a bit more challenging then one might expect. I honestly wouldnt have givin it a 40/40, but that fact remains the same for SSBB in which case, to hell with what i think. Either way im stoked for this game, ESPECIALLY if i win the Wii drawing at work(1 in 5 chances), at which point ill be shelling $40+ for this game in march. Either way, cant wait for this.

...fighting games in general rarely get perfect score...
  • XtremeGmr4life
  • I really doubt

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  XtremeGmr4life
I seriously doubt that Nintendo needs to pay off Famitsu to get SSBB a perfect 40/40. When Nintendo focuses on their big games and take their time with them they are usually the cream of the crop. Look at Super Mario Galaxy they can't compete with the graphic quality or mature content of a PS3 or a 360 game but its the most fun I had with a game the past year. As for Nintendogs they love sim games over there and from what I hear the game isn't so bad. I for one don't care because I don't like sim games and I have a real dog. Just because a game isn't a FPS doesn't mean it isn't deserving of a perfect score.

  • Well,

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  D3stiny_Sm4sher
Either way, Famitsu's 40/40 reviews are for games that I tend to find as the cream of the crop, and I imagine Smash won't be an exception. Brawl has so much in it with so much polish to it that I really can't see how it would get anything less than great reviews unless people review it who simply hate Nintendo. And even then, there's just so much content and options and every other thing, compared to most Wii games, that it's insane.
  • meat_parade
  • Oh my god

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  meat_parade
I don't know how many times I have to keep saying this, but Famitsu's reviews are BOUGHT by publishers. They're not some high and mighty review crew that rates games appropriately. The highest bidder gets the best score, just like any other magazine and major website. Stop making a big fucking deal everytime Famitsu rates a major game. It will ALWAYS get a good score. Just try to name me one major release they rated poorly (and provide proof).

  • After reading this, I have a quick question...

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  JusBleezy
After all of the delays, it seems that it was in fact worth it in the long run. At least to the Japanese market. We will see how well it is received here in the United States. *I believe it will receive rave reviews here too. I fully expect this game to be either in the top 3 in sales or the actual top seller over this entire year in addition to that.* But anyway, my question is.... is their a way to fully convey my hype for this game? A 10? Nope. It's up to a....17? Maybe 21. It fluctuates. Lol

WTF???? Capt. Oli-what and pik-who on SBB?? the same for Diddy kong... the roster is becoming your regular nintendo multiplayer from 2001 and 2002... Geno is far more expected than Olimar and Diddy, far more popular and far more "cooler"... I can ask the same question, why is Sonic on Brawl if it isnt one of Nintendo Characters? Geno deserves his god-damn place, and he better is in it already.

I really do hope they fix all the things wrong with Melee, like L canceling and wave dashing, and the super unbalanced traits that certain characters had *coughjugglypuffcough*. And I still don't know why Geno would come up in this game, he was such a minute character in Mario RPG. It's like asking for Toadsworth (Mario Sunshine) to come in to the fray...

No game can be perfect when it is saddled with Nintendo's terrible online system, and in fact considering Smash Bros. is so online-focused, I'd say it really damages its replay value. It's a shame that Nintendo forced this crap on the developers because it mars their otherwise great-looking title.

I am anticipating this game but, a perfect score from Famitsu does little for me to think it is immaculate. After all they gave the fish petting game an extremely high score based solely on innovation. Japanese people like some weird stuff. I'll wait to hear from EGM or getting hands on play myself.
