The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) welcomes you
to the official website for the proposed US 20 Galena Bypass.
The Galena Bypass is the first segment of the proposed 47 mile Glacier Shadow Pass Freeway to receive funding for Phase II design engineering. This Phase II design engineering is currently underway with final grading plans anticipated in late 2008. Following completion of the grading plans and pending receipt of additional funding, roadway and structure plans will be developed, thereby completing the design engineering work. Limited funds are currently available to purchase right-of way required along the Galena Bypass corridor. However additional funding is needed to complete this land acquisition phase. Additional funding is also needed before construction of the proposed bypass could begin. Based on the current status of the design engineering and land acquisition phases, if the required funding is received, construction could begin in 2009 or 2010.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has made a commitment to continue
public involvement activities through the design and construction phases.
The Department has assited in the formation of a Phase II Citizens Advisory
Group and has committed to holding at least two public information meetings
during the design phase of the Galena Bypass.
For additional information, please see Public Involvement Activities.
