Song Review
If it wasn’t for Dido’s pensive and melancholy delivery, “White Flag” could be every lovelorn stalker’s theme. The singer’s “Hunter” may have been about a lover who wants to wander but “White Flag”’s protagonist is unwilling to give up, even if they know it’s over. It’s gut wrenching to hear how our kicked-to-the-curb heroine will “go down with the ship” and is “in love and always will be.” What keeps “White Flag” from being creepy and totally destitute are some heavenly production touches. There’s Dido’s sweet delivery, the multi-layered sound, the delicate piano outro, and strings that supply an almost empowering element, making the hopeless message sound stately. It’s all very beautiful, the perfect soundtrack for weeping, and the definition of “wistful” in a song.
