A few weeks ago on Podcast Beyond, we covered the madness that is The Last Guardian. Its delay, its hemorrhaging staff, and the loss of figurehead Fumito Ueda. As we went through the timeline, the question became: what's wrong going on in Japan?

The Last Guardian isn't the only Japanese PS3 exclusive to stumble. Gran Turismo 5 also suffered from delays and took years to make, but it was a comment from He Only Does Everything Colin Moriarty that really set the stage for the differences in Sony's culture worldwide. Team Ico released Shadow of the Colossus in 2005 and presumably got to work on The Last Guardian. Naughty Dog released Jak X: Combat Racing in 2005 and presumably got to work on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. In the same six-year span, Naughty Dog released three Uncharted games and Team Ico released nothing.
