Super Smash Bros. Brawl Details
Combat simpler? More non-Nintendo characters?
By Patrick Klepek, 06/05/2006
The blog itself doesn't reveal any startling revelations about the game, but gamers starved for information should be pleased to hear a fellow Smash Bros. fan told 1UP he's been translating Sakurai's thoughts on the popular Smash World forums. You can peruse everything on your own, but here's what pops out:
Hardcore players should take note that the game's being designed to stress "easiness" over the small details of combat, in an attempt to make the entry level for playing the fighter even lower than before.
Sakurai hasn't determined the official character lineup as of yet. The reveal of Solid Snake does mean they're contemplating other non-Nintendo characters, but the characters must have appeared on a Nintendo platform at some point, and they're only considering one or two more additions in this category.
Additionally, while they don't want to include Japanese-specific characters since Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a worldly popular game, the amount of comments he's heard about the Fire Emblem additions makes him think otherwise. At this point, it's too early to tell how the finalized lineup will shape up, but he also doesn't want to feature only popular characters ala Mario and Link.
Even though online networking has already been confirmed, Sakurai isn't so quick to jump on board the now year-old announcement. His team is looking into the feature and hopes to include online play before the game ships next year, but don't expect a complex interface; for example, there are no plans for leader boards.
Interestingly, while Sakurai says a Nintendo DS version of the fighting series isn't in development at the moment, he doesn't rule out one for the future.

1 thing for sure is that it would be awsome for them to have some one like pack man (one with da legs hopefully LOL) or some other classic redone character for brawl style ^_- and sonic O_O he would be sooooo sweet man but yeah man ur right i will be easy bout it and just wait to see how it goes hopefully nintendo will be nice and leave Roy and Marth :) but who knows. but actually now that i think about it....i still would be hurt if they did that to Roy and Marth but hey man :) there will always be a character for everyone im sure if my boy Roy wasnt in there i would still find that 1 character that would be so awsome to me just like Roy was :) (wipes away tears >.>)Thanks for reply man :)

Quick question

When people say that Pacman should be a character, do you mean the one with the legs? If not, then i couldn't think of many moves for him, just saying.

Other Characters To Be Considered
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Misanthropic_Bastard
You know, Captain Falcon is the only character of the F-Zero series to be on Super Smash Bros. They should consider putting other characters like Samurai Ghoro or Zoda. Perhapes they can put Elliwood from Fire Emblem on the GBA. Finally, for some characters, instead of alternate colors, they can have alternate costumes. You can change Samus to Light Samus and Dark Samus. And Mario to Racoon Mario or Frog Mario. Oh and you know who would be a great character? Sora from Kingdom hearts 1 & 2!! You can change his costume to Valor, Wisdom, Master and final forms! Unfortunatly, he's not on any gamecube game. Only on GBA. Thats not good enough.

To Bloodroy: The only characters they're actually getting rid of, that I know of, are the Ice Climbers, and Mr. Game & Watch. They ARE getting rid of Young Link, but he's being replaced with the Wind Waker Version of Link. I think in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Young Link shoulda had a slingshot, instead of his Bow. But that's just me being random as hell. I can't confirm that what I just said is still true today, because I read that info a while back.<p> Now, on to important matters, I heard there were only going to be 1 or 2 more non-Nintendo characters. We all know that at least one of those slots is going to Sonic The Hedgehog, But who could the other slot go to? Maybe a retro version of Pac-Man? Bomberman would be awesome for this game, or Mega-Man, you know, anything wildly popular, and retro! I'm hoping it's a really cool classic character we all forgot about completely, but when we see him/her, we'll definitely fall in love all over again. Can't think of any non-Nintendo characters like that, but it could happen! As for Nintendo Characters, I could see Daisy being a peach clone with different moves, Or maybe Diddy Or Dixie Kong (don't know if rare holds the license to them). I always wanted to see some actual FIGHTING pokemon thrown in the game, you know like Hitmonchan, and Hitmonlee, or one of their evolutions, or Machamp or one of his evolutions, maybe even Mankey. Ya know?

Clones
Posted: userComment.createdDate by BloodRoy
It would break my heart badly if Roy and Marth were not able to make the cut. I honestly belive that no one should be cut but that is not my place to say nintendo is the only one who can have a say so on that :( but i at least wanted to say that the clone characters like Roy Marth C falcon G dorf ect Should Just have different move sets if nintendo is thinking about cutting someone. And as much as i hate to admit that a lot of people love marth and some do roy too but just because somepeople like 1 character more than another does that really mean take off the less liked character?:( And another detail is i can kinda understand the rumor of Young Link being off because he was just the younger version of big link but im not sayin he should be off and for roy and marth They are 2 completely different people and that look completely different and have different story backgrounds in their original game(fire emblem) They should Both be kept for brawl and i dont know if people from nintendo are readings this but OMG ROY IS MY FAVORITE VIDEO GAME CHARATER IN THE WHOLE WORLD AND I REALLY REALLY WOULD (almost) CRY IF HE WAS GONE I LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM( im not gonna shoot with the details >_>) but to make it simple i even like his SHOES and all his voice overs >_> (yes when i said i like everything i mean i like everything >_>) But please think about this who ever reads this and if this can somehow get to the Sakurai person in charge of brawl please do or if there is a way i can email him i would really love to

great choice
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Wii____Zez
Nintendo made a great choice by inserting the third and hopefully not last installment of the Super Smash Bros. series. Ive had all of the SSB games at some point and ive got to tell ya that making the graphics better and adding a online multiplayer interface was the smartest decision for a Wii game. The only catch...the SSBB will not be released untill Feb. 1st 2007. So i hope none of you reading this choose not to buy this, cause that would be stupid. But Nintendo's choise was brillant!!!

random thoughts
Posted: userComment.createdDate by shining_spear
Just my thoughts on this: Easier combat? Why would they change it? They perfected the SSB fighting style in Melee; it was easy enough to get into yet complex enough for hardcore fighters, especially with all the little extra things thrown in ("Wave Dashing" for example). With any luck it won't be too drastically changed and it will still work and feel as good. Secondly, I'm glad they decided to move to some non-Nintendo characters, even if there are only a few. I am surprised at the amount of good Nintendo games they have left untapped for characters, though; Isaac or Saturos from Golden Sun would be awesome, and Hector from Fire Emblem would be cool, too. A certain Kratos from ToS would be very appreciated by some people, I'm sure. Finally, for the love of all that is pure, Samus is a girl. Anyone who is a fan of Metroid or SSB that didn't already know that deserves to be hit. Hard.

My thoughts.
Posted: userComment.createdDate by D.A.
I didn't expect Smash Bros to have anything complex, I wish it would happen, but it won't. The friend code system they use is boring [sorry, but it is], and could be better if they just used servers or something more traditional. As for making combat simpler, I thought SSB was really as easy as it gets. Though there's great depth to the game, people can button mash as beginners. I hope Nintendo doesn't make too drastic of changes to the game.

Before i say anything i just want to point out to "jgibson" that "SNAKE" WAS on the Gamecube! TWINSNAKES ANYONE? JESUS! any way I love the way SSBB Is turning out SO FAR. But this new EASYNESS thing has got me a bit nervous. Wasnt the whole point of the origonal game SSB AND SSBM To practice your skill and beat your opponent? If they take out the need for skill, then its going to be nothing more then a button masher. And thats why i never played Soul Calibur II. Not to mention if this IS a button masher, then think just how much the ONLINE play will suck! Also, im a bit skeptical on how Brawl will be played with the new Wii-motes... It COULD pose a problem, but luckily in the worst case scenario you can always use a Gamecube controller. (Yes the Wii is compatable with the origonal gamecube controller). So on a more positive note, HAL Laboratories has been extremely reliable in the past, so im supporting this Title regardless of my small doubts. Other then that, GOOD JOB HAL! "Let me in HAL!" "Im sorry, but i cant do that Dave..." 2001 A SPACE ODDYSEY-LOLOL

Changes
Posted: userComment.createdDate by geoman451
Personally i thought the difficulty of of SSBM was perfect it wasn't too hard or too easy. I also read somewhere that they might lower the speed. i think that this is also unnecessary since i recently re-played the n64 version and it seemed way to slow. In other words everything is perfect they just need to add some more characters.

lol... Snake wasn't on Nintendo?? Plus hooray for Simon Belomnt!
Posted: userComment.createdDate by jgibson75
Not only was he on the NES for the first US Metal Gear game, he has a remake of Metal Gear Solid on the Gamecube! Not to mention a solid game on the GBC... so he has been around the Nintendo block... In fact, it was big news when he jumped ship from Nintendo to the new Sony Playstation, much in the same way Final Fantasy made waves by jumping from Nintendo to Sony... Now if only Kojima would make a full blown original Metal Gear for the Nintendo Wii... and the DS... how cool would that be... And Simon Belmont is another great idea!

Who I wanna see
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Schunoko
And I've been saying it since Melee. Simon Belmont. It'd be awesome, I swear. You'd have the whip and all the sub weapons, a la Link. There would be something so satisfying about chucking holy water at Jigglypuff. And to Mr. "OMG SNAKE WASN'T ON NINTENDO", get your head out of your ass and play a game made before 1990, plzkthnx. And yah. Girl in Blue. That's Samus. Please don't tell me you thought she was a guy....she still looks like an angry Winry Rockbell.

I wanna see and don't screw it up...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by jgibson75
I hope in making it "easier" they don't screw up the basic gameplay which is pretty solid for a simple brawler... As for my wishlist? Some of them have already made the cut with the addition of Pit, Wario, and Samus sans costume... Here are the others I think would make additions... 1. Sonic: He is the obvious choice... many people have wanted this for years and he has appeared on Nintendo consoles starting with the Gamecube and GBA... 2. Dr. E Gadd: Imagine the attacks he could whip out... all those gadgets he creates!! That would be a fun character to play with if done correctly... and Nintendo owns this one. 3. Captain Olimar and his Pikmin: Not sure how they would go about this one... but all of his attacks should consist of pulling Pikmin out and letting them do the damage... 4. Any character from the Advance War series... give Solid Snake some competition in the gun toting department... 5. Daisy: Not just Peach in a different costume... give her unique attacks (make them all Mario Sports related, for example... she strikes me as the tom boy of the Mario Land Princess gang... she could whip out a tennis racket or a baseball bat or golf clubs or something to do her damage with... That is just a few... others who could be fun are: Billy Hatcher One of the monsters from Rampage or Godzilla A black mage from Final Fantasy (or a mog character for that matter...)

Please stick with the Nintendo Unreal Char.
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Jonathon_Striker
Solid Snake, even if from a Metal Gear long long before the time of many of few, just doesn't seem right at all to be put into SSBB. They could have pulled out another DK character from the series, or even brought out some more RPG characters from the old day to add on to Ness, such as characters from Secret of Mana or Secret of Evermore maybe? Well, at least Mario RPG if we must. SSB might being going downhill from this point if they keep pulling ideas out of a hat.

difficulty
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Pops40k
no problems with them making it easier, as long as that doesn't mean overly simplistic. SSBM was an extremely easy game to play, but complex enough that in multi-player, knowlege of the game and skill generally won, but even the newer players to the franchise didn't go down in a 20 second flawless kill like is so common in games like Mortal Kombat and Tekken. That's what's great about an easy to play fighting game, easy to pick up, but the true difficulty is in your live opponents.

Hey.

They should put in the Paperboy. Bicycle and all. That'd be freaggin' crazy. But their is some really lame news was that they're trying to make the game easier. What a turn-off...

Re: Snake Wasn't On A Nintendo Console
Posted: userComment.createdDate by OminousPotato
Metal Gear Solid wasn't the first Metal Gear game, man. Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Sanke's Revenge were both on the NES, and also Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, a remake of the original MGS using the MGS2 engine, was made for the Cube. You think PlayStation actually has a GOOD exclusive franchise...HAH!

Easier...?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by chougousenki
I can see where being easier/more accessible would line up with the Wii ideals... But seriously.... that should be an easily chosen option before or on the character selection. If Smash Bros is played between only beginners/scrubs, it is simple yet fundamentally fun. However, if it is played by skilled vets who, much like myself, have been waiting half a decade for this sequel... it goes without saying that Brawl should be able to accomodate for all of the practice and passion that we've put into it. Simply make an option for "Beginner" or "Advanced." Capcom offered these options in Marvel vs. Street Fighter (Not Marvel vs. Capcom) and it worked just swimmingly. ingenuity loves simplicity, and genius lends its kindness to Miyamoto and Sakurai, but perhaps they should think about this.

the other likely third-party characters..
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Chargin'Chuck
they said probably one or two more; i think it will most likely be Sonic and Pac-man. Yuji Naka has said before that he would love to see Sonic characters in a smash bros game; and Nintendo has had a rather productive working relationship with namco in the past few years, leading Pac-man to become a playable character in Mario Kart: Arcade GP' so smash bros seems like the next logical step there. thoughts, anyone?

Metal Gear: NES, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes GameCube, Snake's Revenge: NES
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Darlkas
But Snake appearing on SSBB is the least of my worries, I just hope Sakurai adds Ayra from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War! She can kick both Marth's and Roy's asses!

Twin Snakes
Posted: userComment.createdDate by prinny_overlord
There was a Gamecube re-release of Metal Gear Solid (lucky for me, too, because I joined the MGS bandwagon late). Sonic would be my number 1 choice for another third party player. Maybe an early Final Fantasy character from the SNES days, like Cecil or Mog.

Another "statement" that strikes me funny...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Darlkas
I just read some of the translations, and this appeared: #71-80: The speed of the game will be "moderated." Unclear whether this means slower or faster, but slower is more likely. --- SSBM>SSB in terms of speed. Man, I hope Sakurai doesn't make Brawl easIER (the franchise is already too easy for anyone to play), nor SSB slow.

Get rid of...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by FJNBK
Mewtwo and Mr. Game and Watch. Mewtwo just didn't work, while Mr. Game and Watch just seemed gimmicky. I'd also like to see Jigglypuff and Pichu go. It would be cool if you could play as Goron Link and Zora Link. Sora would be good too, along with Cyborg Ninja.

Makes you wonder...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Darlkas
How much easier can this game get? And if it gets "easier" will it affect the game negatively in any way? I say this because SSB-SSBM are THE EASIEST FIGHTING GAMES OF ALL TIMES! It is easier than... wow Street Fighter II or even Mortal Kombat, or anything else one can think of. So it's definately a game any rookie can pick up, choose a favorite character and in matter of seconds master it (even at the expense of becoming a one-trick pony). So I'm a bit worried with this "lowering the bar" thing...
-
-
So easy, you will use only one button
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Klus_Goose
first character to press A wins. HOW FUN...HOW INNOVATIVE...I'm sorry, but Nintendo is catering to the fetus-2 year old age group.

Sounds interesting
Posted: userComment.createdDate by SavageEvil
Not sure how much easier this game can get, Melee was easy to get into, but much harder to master than the original game. This is pretty much the easiest fighting game I've ever played, but it boasts serious depth that makes other fighters look silly. Hmm I think the other characters might be Mega Man and Sonic, both are very popular on nintendo systems and have been around for well over ten years apiece. Soo what if sonic just moved here a few years back, he's still popular on Nintendo systems than any other. To the guy who said that there weren't enough move sets, what would you need with many move sets? Have you tried to string combos together, combo ability changes depending on the amount of damage the comboed character already has sustained, and depending on which stage you are on, it changes yet again. All that is done with the limited move set, why on earth would they need to complicate things with more moves?!? SSBM is the most balanced, easy to learn hard to master fighting game around, nothing can top it in that retrospect. My opinion, and I have played loads of fighting games from Street Fighter II on up to VF4, DOA series is a turd.

Strange...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Ultima9999
I always thought the allure outside of of classic Nintendo characters was the easy to pick up and play mechanics of SSB. How they could even make it easier is beyond me, and I really hope it doesn't water down the experience. And I do hope ALL the fighters from the GC version remains and they just add more. Mario, Luigi, Samus (in suit), Star Fox, Ness, Cpt. Falcon, Yoshi, Jiggyly Puff, Peacn, Daisy, Fire Emblem Boys, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong, Bowser, all better return. Others I'd like to see.... Mother Brain, Birdy, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, maybe Pikim(s) as far as NON Nintendo characters, i think Sonic should be in shoe in, Mega Man would be awesome as well. I can't wait to play this, I do hope they incorporate some kinda of online play, maybe the way DS does friendcodes, but just not as clunky and cumbersome.
-
-
I liked the combat... and don't remove previous fighters!
Posted: userComment.createdDate by The_Amazing_Gabbo
The combat in SSBM was easy to pick up and play, but it also became somewhat complex as you got better. Don't dumb it down too much... Also, I hope they don't remove characters that were in SSMB, even Marth, Roy, Pichu, and Game and Watch. I hope Brawl has like, 40 characters, including Megaman and Sonic.
-
-
Wasn't this game too easy already?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by The_Limper
That is one reason I never loved this game quite as much everyone else. There isn't enough move sets and it is too easy. I don't like the sound of making this game even easier.
-
-
I trust you ...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by h8billg8ts
I know Nintendo's Marketing Team is making the Wii universal so when I hear the dumbed down any game it just means for us hard core players to just up the difficulty level in the Option Screens. It's ok with me cause I trust you Nintendo ...
-
-
Easy? Well, it makes sense...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by chrono_cross_maniac
hmm...at least we can't say Nintendo's sending a contradictory message; they said they wanted to attract new gamers, and the fact that they plan on making Smash Brawl easier to pick up is a direct example of what Nintendo's doing to attract gamers. After all, the Smash series is, without a doubt, Nintendo's biggest asset. To make it playable by the masses should perhaps help them...well, I hope anyway.
-
-
Easiness?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by D3stiny_Sm4sher
I understand their decision for opening the series up to less 'hardcore' players, but making the combat EASIER as a WHOLE? That's ridiculous. It's simple enough as is. SSB has always been as simple or complex as you want it to be. Brawl had BETTER have all of the subtleties of SSBM and, hopefully, more, or else I'll be puzzled. They're using the standard controller to please hardcore audiences, but they're going to make combat SIMPLER? I'm crossing my fingers that by this, they mean to make it easier to LEARN, but will keep all those subtleties that make Melee so much better than the original.
