Pennsylvania is at a crossroads in funding its transportation needs, and faces the serious challenges of rising gas prices, energy driven economic cycles, non-conformance to EPA air quality regulations and ex-urban sprawl.
Its time to get back on track. To address the monumental challenges that lie before us, transit funding must be reprioritized
to projects that deliver measurable results. Regional planning must focus on growing and supporting the urban cores within
the state to produce an absolute reduction in vehicle miles travelled.
Its time to make responsible use of scarce taxpayer funding and rebuild our passenger rail network.
Energy supplies and the environment dictate this for our well being and survival.
United, we hold those in power responsible for our future, and lead the charge for change.
May 2, 2011 marks the day that began the campaign to address the Delaware Valley's transportation funding and prioritization situation by a citizen led delegation. With a distinct focus on SEPTA and DVRPC, PA-TEC initiated the citizen led dialogue that will address the need to reform how and where scarce capital funds are spent on SEPTA projects.
A group of citizens from across the region including several PA-TEC members visited State Legislators, Senators,
as well as other State and Federal officials in Harrisburg. The delegation met with these officials to
discuss transportation funding, project prioritization, civil rights and environmental justice as it pertains to the public
input process for transportation planning.
The meetings were very informative for all parties, and the citizen led delegation looks forward to positive changes in transportation spending that may come about as a result of these ongoing discussions. Several follow up meetings are planned in late spring, including a trip to Washington D.C. to meet with Federal officials and agencies that pertain to the issues central to our region's prosperity.
PA-TEC is grateful to the parties involved, including elected and agency officials, for having the opportuinty to participate in the process of reforming and reprioritizing application of scarce public funds. PA-TEC extends its sincere thanks to all those who helped make this milestone day possible.
