At Amiras in the county of Viannos Crete, stands a quiet reminder of the holocaust that took place on September 14th 1943. The war memorial is set high in the mountains, the first time I visited this memorial, a few years ago, it was deserted and very quiet, even the birds were not flying overhead.a peaceful reminder
of the Greek men women and children
massacred on Crete in the Second World War
This time on my visit, there were many Germans who came to pay their respects to the men women and children executed in this beautiful village.
358 men, women and children were executed by the Germans, who then proceeded to burn most of the surrounding villages after an apparent order to Destroy Viannos County was given by a German commander.

Each memorial has the names of the Greek men, women and children massacred in the little Greek village, etched in stone for all time
I walked quietly along the stones gazing at the many names of the Greeks that are now immortalised etched in the stones
and towards the single memorial at the end overlooking the valley of the village of Amiras in the area of Viannos Kreta
