Hollywood actor speaks to area rotarians

Coos Bay - He's been in more than 50 movies, five television series and dozens of stage productions. Now a Hollywood face plays a new role as the guest speaker for a local rotary club.

Best known for his work on the television show, "Trapper John M.D.," actor Gregory Harrison spoke at the Coos Bay/North Bend Rotary Club on Tuesday about his life on the Coast.

Harrison, who now lives in Eugene, was also a Gold Beach resident for 15 years.

He says he fell in love with the Coast back in 1991, while he was shooting a movie in Portland.

It's the small town feel and being able to raise his four kids are some reasons why he's stayed, even though he still works out of Los Angeles.

"I make the effort to keep a double life going," says Harrison. "I probably have lost some jobs over the years because of just being so remote. But that's a small price to pay for the quality of life that I've had."

Harrison adds, that he doesn't think film crews from Hollywood will be coming here anytime soon, since he says, other states are offering some advantages.

"It's very competitive right now," says Harrison. "People are trying to get film companies in their states so they are doing huge tax incentives so Oregon does not match what some of the other states are willing to do, to give 20 to 30 percent rebates for a budget of a film. That's huge."

You can catch Harrison next on the big screen in a film called, "Love N' Dancing," with Billy Zane and Amy Smart as well as television movie on a cable channel.
