AMUSE BOUCHE |
There's something so refreshingand so rareabout a restaurant that just feels right, even before one takes that first bite. The Village Idiot is a winning English pub that seems to have charmed every person who has visited; Tengu--Santa Monica does scene-y, black-and-white class and breezy-beachy all at once. La Cantina's cheap Mexican eats serve tourists and clubbers alike; the Italian cuisine at All' Angelo amazes. FOOD STAR |
|
One of LA's most recognizable chefs, for those who can see him through the perpetual throng of ladies surrounding him at all times, Govind Armstrong has a reinvigorated hit in his newly redesigned Table 8 (and its new sister restaurant in Miami). Armstrong claims he didn't even flinch when he heard designer Thomas Schoos use the words "mohair wall." Well, maybe a littlebut they're now writing a book together, so it all worked out. Lonny Pugh
The newly reopened Table 8 gives greater emphasis to the lounge experience. Can you tell me about the reasoning behind this and the response you've gotten?
The design of the restaurant before didn't lend itself to having a lounge area. The flow wasn't there, and there was no cohesiveness between the bar and lounge. So we decided to make the other side, where the bar was, the dining room. Now there's a more defined area for people to hang out. So far, the response has been great. It's the best of both worlds.
What are a few highlights from your new lounge menu?
The grilled-cheese sandwich with pulled beef short ribs and the truffled gruyere fondue are two items I'm not allowed by my customers to remove. New items include a mini-bouillabaisse and a sampler of Wisconsin artisan cheese.
I hear you are doing a book with Thomas Schoos. Does this mean when you first heard the words "mohair wall," you weren't at all concerned about the dramatically different new décor?
[Laughs] A little bit, but I did understand his vision and it's beautiful. It's just the sort of change we needed. My first book, Small Bites, Big Nights will be released April 10. When I have people over to my house, that's how I entertain. Then the book with Thomas is a book on food and design, everything from the tabletops to the stemware to the food.
