Book of the Week: The City of Ember

The city of Ember is surrounded by an inky darkness that is only relieved by the many electric lights. The city's inhabitants have lived comfortably for hundreds of years on vast storehouses of food, but now something is wrong. The great lamps that light the city are beginning to flicker, and the storehouses are almost empty.

Borders of Infinity (1989) [collection]
Review by voralfred (2007-02-06)
This is a collection. I reviewed all three novellas it conatains (Mountains of Mourning, Labyrinth, and the novella The Borders of Infinity) so you can go and look at them. I must add that Mountains of Mourning is one of my absolute favorite works (I rated it 10).
In addition to the three novellas, this collection contains a few "glueing" pages, which constitute a short story by themselves. Of course it is not such an important ingredient in the Vorkosigan Saga, but it must be noted that it is referred to in a later book of the series. So since in the regrouping of the three novellas in chronological order in Omnibus editions (three - or more precisely four, Labyrinth appears twice- different ones!) these pages will be lost, there will be an allusion that loses its original reference if this collection is not reedited. So buy it while you still can...
