Wild Wednesday In New Jersey

Description

Last month, Monstrous Monday set the bar so historically high for winter swells in New Jersey, the next day’s perfect, overhead leftovers barely registered among these depleted chargers shaking off their adrenaline hangovers. That’s how high the bar got raised. And every session thereafter would have a hard time even doing a chin-up.

Wild Wednesday did its best, but failed. In the best way possible.

“Broken boards and gashes,” Surfline informant John Bellingeri texted us at 8:48am from a popular Northern Jersey beachbreak, along with a clip of Stevie Pittman throwing shakas while bleeding from multiple face wounds. Stevie’s part of that I-95 squad, including Massachusetts’ Robbie Goodwin and North Carolina’s Owen Moss, who rose to the challenge of Monstrous Monday and have been rightfully adopted by the Garden State’s inner circle of tube lords. Knowing that, Pittman cleaned his face, grabbed another mini-gun, and headed back out there. “Yeah, I’m all good,” Stevie smirked between sessions. “No stitches, not yet [laughs]. It’s tough today. We got a couple, though.”

That may be the understatement of the whole El Niño season. His Tarheel compadre Owen Moss — arguably the top performer on Monstrous Monday — was a little more forthright: “When we saw it at first light it was solid. I was so psyched to ride my 6’10” out there again. Some of the best waves I’ve ever seen on the East Coast.”
