Monumental statues of Gautam Buddha were carved into the cliff-face at Bamyan, located in the Bamyan valley in the Hazarajat region of central Afghanistan, The statues were, respectively, 35 and 53 m tall. They were intentionally destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
