The concept of "class" of an OID is not standardized in Recommendation ITU-T X.660 | ISO/IEC 9834-1. It is introduced in this OID repository to better understand what is referenced by each OID.

The following classes are used in the OID repository:
  • Individuals;
  • Companies;
  • Countries;
  • All sorts of entities (e.g. organizations, administrations, groups, etc.);
  • Standards development organizations (SDOs) and their working groups;
  • Standards (e.g. ISO or IEC international standards, ITU-T and ITU-R Recommendations, other standards);
  • Products;
  • Management Information Base (MIB) objects for network management;
  • Policy Information Base (PIB) objects for policy decisions;
  • Objects in GDMO (Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Objects) notation for network management;
  • Message handling systems conforming to the Rec. ITU-T X.400 | ISO/IEC 10021 series of standards;
  • Objects for a Directory application conforming to the Rec. ITU-T X.500 | ISO/IEC 9594 series of standards;
  • Certificates, certification authorities, etc., used in a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) conforming to Rec. ITU-T X.509 | ISO/IEC 9594-8;
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) elements;
  • ASN.1 elements (e.g. types, information objects, encoding rules);
  • ASN.1 modules;
  • Modules in other languages than ASN.1 (note: it denotes a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MODULE-IDENTITY when used together with class "Management Information Base (MIB)");
  • Algorithms (including cryptographic algorithms);
  • Healthcare (including objects registered in the HL7 OID registry);
  • Space data systems (including objects registered in the Space Assigned Numbers Authority (SANA) registries);
  • Registration authorities allocating OIDs;
  • Identification schemes;
  • Temporary objects (may be used together with another class);
  • Testing (may be used together with another class);
  • Examples (may be used together with another class);
  • Deprecated (or obsolete) OIDs (may be used together with another class).
