Suharto's half-brother fined, jailed for four years

Indonesia's Supreme Court has ruled that the half-brother of ex-president Suharto must serve a four-year jail sentence for corruption and pay $US10 million to the state, officials say.

A five-member panel of judges reviewing an appeal filed by businessman Probosutejo decided unanimously Monday to uphold a 2003 ruling by a lower court, central Jakarta court spokesman Mashudi Ridwan Mansyur told journalists.

Mr Probosutejo was sentenced to four years in jail for corruption in 2003 but the sentence was cut to two years on appeal.

He then made a final appeal to the country's highest court.

Suharto's half-brother has so far escaped jail and must serve the full four-year term once prosecutors ecxecute the Supreme Court's decision.

The panel declared that Probosutejo, "has been proven guilty, legally and convincingly, of having engaged in corruption jointly with others," Mr Mansyur said.

It ordered him to pay the state compensation of 100.9 billion rupiah ($US10 million) as well as a fine of 30 million rupiah, he says.

Mr Probosutejo made sensational headlines last month after he told reporters he was asked to pay bribes amounting to six billion rupiah to have his conviction overturned by the court.

He also revealed that he had already spent 10 billion rupiah in lower courts to try to stay out of jail.

The report prompted the arrest of one of Mr Probosutejo's lawyers and five Supreme Court clerks.

The head of the Supreme Court, Bagir Manan, denied receiving any bribes but the country's independent anti-graft commission plans to question him.
