Biography/History noteGerman organist, copyist, and composer. He probably studied under Martin Agricola in Magdeburg, then from 1555 until his death he was the organist and church-composer at two churches in Hamburg. He published a number of collections of choral works and musical works by Dutch and German composers. His only known composition is a Te Deum for four voices. He was the father of Hieronymus Praetorius and the grandfather of Jacob Praetorius, II, both also composers.
