deadpan
1. verb To say something in an emotionless manner, often to humorous effect. "Oh, you'll get lots of peace and quiet here," he deadpanned as shrieking kids ran around him. As my boss handed me the pages of data I had to enter into the system, she deadpanned, "Have fun." "I'm so excited to drive home today," Carly deadpanned as she peered out the office window at the torrential rain.
2. noun A face that lacks expression or emotion. His deadpan makes it impossible for me to ever know if he's being funny or serious. She's one of those people who has a very dry sense of humor and an accompanying deadpan. I began to suspect him when I saw his deadpan at the funeral. I mean, his wife had just died, and he has no expression at all on his face? Bizarre.
3. noun One whose face lacks expression or emotion. He looked like a deadpan, so I had no idea what he was thinking. Who has a deadpan like that at a funeral? Most people look either emotional or uncomfortable, right? Don't be fooled if I look like a deadpan. Sometimes, I freeze up because I'm overwhelmed by just how much I'm feeling!
4. adjective Lacking expression or emotion. Her deadpan expression offered no hint as to how she really felt about the issue. Listen, you need to perfect a deadpan facial expression if you're going to be firing people regularly. Her deadpan tone made me wonder if she was trying to mask deep emotional pain.

3. mod. dull and lifeless. (Usually said of a face, expression, etc.) He has such a deadpan approach to everything.
