From Proto-Italic *waros, from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (highland, raised protrusion; high). Cognate with varix (varicose vein), verrūca (wart), Proto-Germanic *wer(r)uz (lip), Tocharian B weru (blister), Lithuanian viras (tapeworm larva; pimple).[1]
