From Old Galician-Portuguese enganar, from Vulgar Latin or Late Latin ingannāre, present active infinitive of ingannō (I trick, deceive) (attested in a gloss), from Latin ganniō, gannīre. Compare Portuguese enganar and Spanish engañar.
