Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to List of neo-Nazi organizations does not have an edit summary. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Tick Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Hello Hypoxine, I'm responding to your message late because I only just figured out how to respond to a talk-page message. Anyway, since your message I've been trying to be more careful with edit summaries. I hope this helps! :) Geogranerd (talk) 17:25, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mapping (subgenre)

[edit]

@Geogranerd: I am trying to better understand the Mapping (subgenre) entry you included on the Mapping disambiguation page. I was the one that recently removed it from the list for the following combination of reasons: 1) It is a Wikipedia:Red link to a page that does not exist, 2) There are no other links in the description that provide supporting information and context, 3) The description is difficult to understand, if you are not familiar with the topic being described, and 4) the description is excessively long for a disambiguation page. Not being familiar with the topic myself, I would like to help ensure your contribution doesn't get deleted again, and help improve the entry on the disambiguation page so that it is more easily understood by those of us without animated mapping experience. The first thing that would help me understand this better is the use of the term "subgenre". What are you saying "mapping" is a subgenre of? Is there a genre within YouTube videos that "mapping" is a subgenre of? If so, what is the primary YouTube video genre? Thank you. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 22:09, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, as I am familiar with mapping, I think I could explain a couple things, apologies if the text turns out too long. So, (1) the first thing I would like to discuss is that I personally think mapping is a subgenre of the larger history, alternate history and alternate future genre. My opinion is based on the consideration that the mapping community, although quite large, is not big enough to be simply put as its own genre; and that, inside of the larger genre, mapping has its own format of animated mapping to showcase events. (2) Second thing: I tried to keep the description of the mapping subgenre as short and informative as possible, but I understand if it's too long; this is due to the fact that the subgenre of mapping is easier to understand visually than on text. (3) Thirdly, there exists an actual wiki about the subgenre, which, even though disputedly an unreliable source, is the best I could find, and would help when an actual page for the subgenre is created. (4) Fourthly, the subgenre has a huge number of varieties. As I've mentioned on the animated mapping article, it is broken into two main branches: videomapping, or historical mapping, and fictional mapping. Fictional mapping is often called mapping (without adjectives) as such, because videomappers are generally not in the same community as fictional mappers and, with little exceptions, call themselves "map animators" or "videomappers". I'm not going to go into too much detail, but I wrongfully made the claim that videomapping is only historical, because the main noticeable feature of videomapping is that it personifies cartographic entities considerably less often than fictional mapping. While it is mostly true, a distinction needs to be made between historical videomapping, the most common kind (used to animate historical events), and fictional videomapping. On the other hand, fictional mapping is almost exclusively fictional, and it is the branch of mapping with the most varieties and subvarieties (if you want me to name all of them, I can, but this paragraph is already getting long). Thank you for asking. Geogranerd (talk) 08:14, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Geogranerd: Thank you for opening my eyes to a world I did not know existed. I will take each of your points:

1) If I understand you correctly, you are saying there is genre of YouTube videos for "History, Alternate History, and Alternate Future", and you see "Mapping" as a subgenre of that. Is that correct?
2) Because this is intended to be a disambiguation page, the definition should be as short as possible and a detailed explanation found at whatever link you want to provide. One possible suggestion follows. All the other details should then be described in the "Animated mapping" article.
Mapping (subgenre), a YouTube video content subgenre that employs Animated mapping
3) When I read the definition of Mapping on the Wiki you provided, it says the term "mapping" is synonymous with "video mapping", and that "historical mapping" and "fictional mapping" are both types of "video mapping". (See definition HERE)
4) Your definition in point 4 doesn't seem to agree with the definition on the Wiki you provided. On the other hand, the wiki does say the term "Mapper" applies primarily to "fictional mapping". (I get the impression "fictional mapping" could be considered a form of video gaming.) Can you clarify the wiki definition and your definition? Are you talking about two different things?

By including this as a red link, it implies you believe the topic should have it's own article on Wikipedia. Is that what you are thinking? If not, I recommend removing the red link. If you want to keep the red link, I suggest changing it to Mapping (YouTube subgenre). After reviewing the wiki, it seems justifiable to create a new Wikipedia article that covers the topic, but I would think "Video mapping" would be a better title for the article. Currently "Video mapping" redirects to Projection mapping. Although the topic of "projection mapping" apparently does use the term "video mapping", it seems to be a different concept than the type of "video mapping" we are discussing here. I hope my perspective on the matter is helpful. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 17:00, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! For the responses you have presented, I believe:
1) Yes, I see mapping as a subgenre of a genre I believe encompasses history, alternate history and alternate future.
2) Yes, the definition you have shown is both short and clear, I believe Wikipedia should use it. But you can add "mostly-YouTube" instead of YouTube, point which I will discuss on section 4).
3) Yes, the wiki says "Video Mapping" is an alternative name of "mapping". However, the term is extremely rare, and it is not to be confused with videomapping, which is one of the mapping subgenre's main branches. Though the Mapping Wiki is not 100% accurate, it is informative especially on the basics.
4) The term "mapper" applies to people who practice mapping in general, but it is primarily used to refer to those who do fictional mapping. Also, the term "mapping" is also primarily used to refer to fictional mapping. However, fictional mapping is not a form of video gaming. For a clarification between the wiki's definition and my definition, it's very clear for me that the wiki's definition of mapping is only true for fictional mapping, and it later shows that fictional mapping is where a narrative is created. My very basic definition for fictional mapping is a branch of mapping where cartographic entities are personified on a map and create a narrative, usually accompanied by countryballs or the entity's name on the map, although blank maps are possible.
I do believe mapping should have an article on Wikipedia, but I want to clarify that I don't think it should be renamed to Mapping (YouTube subgenre) simply because, while the mapping fandom is generally on YouTube, there exist many more communities, such as the Scratch Mapping Community (which has a wiki), the former Google+ Mapping Community, the Reddit mapping community (not an official community but based on the r/mapping subreddit), and many more; and not "Video mapping" for aforementioned reasons. I think it should be kept as Mapping (subgenre). For a final note, don't worry about your perspective, you've just been introduced to a topic you haven't heard of before, and that's why I respect it! Geogranerd (talk) 18:28, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Geogranerd: After I posted my message I realized the comparison to "gaming" was off base. I still think a title other than "Mapping (subgenre)" should be considered. It begs the question, "subgenre of what?". The word "subgenre" doesn't clarify what field, or area of knowledge, is being referenced. Some alternatives might be "Mapping (video sharing)" or "Mapping (Fandom)", but I don't know that those hit the mark either. Thanks for taking the time to help me understand. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 19:44, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Right, the word "subgenre" doesn't seem fitting. "Mapping (fandom)" sounds good for a rename. Geogranerd (talk) 06:43, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Geogranerd: I changed the Mapping disambiguation page, and made a minor tweak to the corresponding Animated mapping section. Please review to make sure it seems correct. Thank you. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 15:04, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • One more thing to consider ... Someone might remove the red link because there are no other articles with that link. To avoid that, you could start a stub article, or locate other appropriate articles where you can include a link to Mapping (fandom).
Reviewed it, the changes seem well-made. A stub page for mapping should probably be made soon, which I may or may not do. Geogranerd (talk) 16:51, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I created the page! It can be found at Mapping (fandom). Geogranerd (talk) 18:10, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Mapping (fandom) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline. WP:BEFORE did not reveal any significant coverage on Gnews, Gbooks or Gscholar and all references used are very bad (youtube and fandom/wikia). This is pure WP:OR. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of neo-Nazi organizations, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Público. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

List of neo-Nazi organizations

[edit]

This is just a heads-up that I removed some of your additions on List of neo-Nazi organizations#Spain. This was either because there was no source that they are neo-Nazis, or because there was an article that said that they belonged to some other part of the far right. Please add sources, or discuss on the talk page if you disagree with my position that the far right organizations are not neo-Nazis. Sjö (talk) 04:55, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for doing that! I added many far-right Spanish organizations, but I was unsure if some of them fell under the umbrella of neo-Nazism. I've provided a verified source for every group I found to be neo-Nazi, so I appreciate some cleanup of ones who aren't Geogranerd (talk) 19:01, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anarchism

[edit]

Hi 29Islands,

I saw your work on articles related to anarchism and wanted to say hello, as I work in the topic area too. If you haven't already, you might want to watch our noticeboard for Wikipedia's coverage of anarchism, which is a great place to ask questions, collaborate, discuss style/structure precedent, and stay informed about content related to anarchism. Take a look for yourself!

And if you're looking for other juicy places to edit, consider expanding a stub, adopting a cleanup category, or participating in one of our current formal discussions.

Feel free to say hi on my talk page and let me know if these links were helpful (or at least interesting). Hope to see you around. czar 21:32, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Czar,
Thanks for messaging me! I'm just getting started on anarchist topics (and on editing Wikipedia in general), and browsing the anarchism portal and WikiProject I get the impression that this is an article scope with much potential. While I can't guarantee my activity, I hope to be a helping hand in certain ways (tendencies and organizations, expanding stubs, maybe partaking in discussions, etc.) as I expand my knowledge of libertarian socialism.
Cheers! 29Islands (talk) 18:18, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
