Does it matter that we list the tools here, if we don't explain what they are? -- Zoe

If you know enough to know what Jakarta is you will know what the tools do.... But they ought to be linked and detailed. user:sjc

Zigger, what is the difference between Jakarta projects and Jakarta-related projects ? Jay 08:52, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

You may be confusing projects with products, which would be understandable. The summary on my edit [1] was intended to show that the information source was http://jakarta.apache.org/, and that is also the source for the terminology. It is the Jakarta homepage that distinguishes between the two lists.
  1. The Apache Software Foundation has a number of projects.
  2. One of those is the Apache Jakarta Project, which covers a number of products, e.g. Cactus.
  3. Other Apache projects are single products, e.g. Apache Ant, and some of these are classed by the Jakarta Project as Jakarta-related products.
My guess is that some Apache projects/products are Jakarta-related because they are written in Java (like Ant or Maven), and others because they are a relevant platform (like the HTTP server). --Zigger 16:09, 2004 May 7 (UTC)

I am writing a degree plan for myself where I will develop a jakarta environment as my capstone project. I hope to keep it purely jakarta and from apache software foundation offerings for simplicity as I have to educate my mentor as I go along, he is a well known social scientist whom I have interested in the Information Society. The degree is for IT in public service.

I am researching the products (and projects) for the degree plan but that does not guarentee accuracy, implementing them will.

I noticed the last updates are more than a year old, hence the above comments, cheers --John van v 17:43, 18 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Please rewrite this. The tone is not right. This is probably not politically correct. The Jakarta conference room at Sun Microsystems was named after the capital city of Indonesia.
Put yourself in the shoes of readers from Indonesia - why belittle them? It just reeks of American arrogance. Then Americans wonder why they aint liked no more outside USA.
How would you like it something like this is written in Encyclopedias of the world?
The new 5G Wi-Max technology called Dallas is not named after the city in USA. It is named after Mr Narayan Murthy's favorite dog - who inspired him to fund the new startup company in Bangalore?
I suppose the editorial team should not be so insensitive.

Please don't shoot the messenger. I'm just cuttin' and pastin' here... -Bouchecl 01:14, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Jakarta is named after the conference room at Sun Microsystems" but then immediately afterwards "At the time, Sun's Java software division was headquartered in a Cupertino building". So which one is right? Jakarta or Cupertino? Terrabalt (talk) 05:59, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
