Abstract
In keeping with the functionalist outlook of contemporary Western psychological research, most studies of the behavior of organisms employ procedures that require the behavior to be externally directed so as to involve the organism in gross interaction with the environment. In contrast, the new studies in trained autoregulation or “biofeedback training” require the organism to produce an internal effect. The methods of experimental control are external, as before, but the goal-directed behavior specified by the experimenter is an internal physiological effect.
