Sustained financing to support universal health coverage (UHC) is essential for countries to expand quality essential health services and ensure financial protection for the most vulnerable. Yet, in many countries, low and stagnant government revenues, lack of prioritization of health, and fragile health system governance and public financial management continue to hamper progress.
In partnership with the Government of Japan and the World Health Organization, this World Bank Academy Program will use peer-to-peer learning, country experiences and evidence related to UHC financing to devise country-appropriate sustainable health financing solutions. It will bring together essential decision-makers from each country, including those from ministries of health, finance and planning, co-creating with them a program to:
- Develop country-specific approaches for enhancing the equity, alignment and effectiveness of domestic and external financing for health
- Strengthen public financial leadership capacities required to advance the UHC agenda
- Provide a space for integrated governance and transformative policy dialogue between ministries of Health and Finance
Program initiation: May 2025, Tokyo
