What on earth is this? That was my first reaction after hearing Sophie's blog-favourite debut release 'Bipp' last year. Glossy, sugar coated, fluorescent pop is probably the best way to describe his unique sound.
But hold on, isn't Sophie a girls name? Not in this case. Sophie is actually a guy from London who is producing some of the most futuristic underground pop music of the century. It truly is like nothing you've ever seen or heard before. Sophie's now signed to equally as forward thinking Glaswegian electronic music label Numbrs, also home to Rustie, Redhino and Darq E Freaker. Just a few weeks ago Sophie made his return with another new two-track E.P in the form of 'Lemonade' and 'Hard'. It's indefinable by genre but thats part of the appeal. The ethos seems to be, why should something have to be given a tagging, instead it can just appeal to anyone and everyone who enjoys it. Sophie's live shows are also known to be rather odd - at one show a blow up female doll was placed inside a blow up kidds pool filled with colourful bubbles. Its as much about the aesthetic appeal as it is the music.
And witth a new collaboration with PC Music label boss AG COOK surfacing under the name of QT, a 23 second preview of www.drinkqt.com was uploaded on to soundcloud just the other day and apparently Diplo had some involvement with it.
Whoever Sophie really is, this is surely where pop music should be heading in 2014!
A proper rave experience! The vibe was great and the venue super cool. We couldn't stop dancing. Sophie kept the tension really high with a definitely not banal mix of his tracks. Also, the previous performers did great.
Getting in and out was also quite tidy.
