Sunday was a day of surprises at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
While the likes of Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Gudaf Tsegay lived up to expectation in the 1500m finals, and Sander Skotheim did likewise in the heptathlon, there were several shock wins throughout the final day of action in Nanjing&rsquo;s Cube.
Claire Bryant set the tone with the first final of the day, taking a surprise victory in the long jump. Another shock soon followed as world and Olympic high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh was beaten by Australian duo Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson.
New Zealand shot putter Tom Walsh and sprint hurdler Devynne Charlton both produced their best form of the year so far to take surprise golds. Prudence Sekgodiso, meanwhile, was similarly surprised to win the women&rsquo;s 800m. The men&rsquo;s 800m, by contrast, went to the form book as Josh Hoey held on for victory.
Normal order was restored by the end of the day with USA taking dominant wins in both 4x400m finals. It meant they ended the championships top of the medals table with 16 medals, six of them gold.

<h2>Ingebrigtsen banishes demons with completion of distance double</h2>
Heading into these championships, Jakob Ingebrigtsen had never won a world title at 1500m, nor did he own a world indoor crown. He has remedied all that and more with the completion of the distance double in Nanjing. A day after winning the 3000m, the Norwegian took 1500m gold in 3:38.79. Britain's Neil Gourley held off USA's Luke Houser for silver.

Gudaf Tsegay left the Paris Olympic Games feeling disappointed after missing out on a medal in all three disciplines she contested. Here in Nanjing, the Ethiopian was back to her imperious best, taking 1500m gold with a championship record of 3:54.86 in what was one of the most dominant display of the championships. Teammate Diribe Welteji took silver, just ahead of Britain's Georgia Hunter Bell.

Another week, another incredible display of all-round ability from Norway's Sander Skotheim. Having already won the European indoor title this year, Skotheim claimed gold here in Nanjing with 6475, holding off outdoor European champion Johannes Erm (6437) and Germany's Till Steinforth (6275).

Defending champion and world indoor record-holder Devynne Charlton hadn't had the best season leading into Nanjing, but the Bahamian got it right when it matters and claimed 60m hurdles gold in 7.72. In an incredibly close race where just 0.04 separated the top six women, European indoor champion Ditaji Kambundji earned silver in 7.73 and Ackera Nugent took bronze in 7.74.

Defending champion Tsige Duguma started as the pre-race favourite, but her challenge started to fade half way into the race. South Africa's Prudence Sekgodiso timed her race to perfection, though, and came through to win in a world-leading 1:58.40. Ethiopia's Nigist Getachew took silver in 1:59.63 and Portugal's Patricia Silva claimed a surprise bronze.

USA's Josh Hoey completed a remarkable undefeated indoor season by taking gold over 800m in Nanjing. It was one of the tightest races of his year so far as Belgium's Eliott Crestan almost caught him on the line, but Hoey held on to win in 1:44.77. Crestan took silver in 1:44.81 with Spain's Elvin Josue Canales claiming bronze in 1:45.03.

Ingebrigtsen and Tsegay deliver while others surprise on final day at WIC Nanjing 25

The women&rsquo;s 4x400m started as a race but ended as more of a procession for a dominant US team that eventually won by almost five seconds.
The quartet of Quanera Hayes, Bailey Lear, Rosey Effiong and Alexis Holmes teamed up to claim the final gold medal of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25, clocking 3:27.45.
Poland, who had led after the first leg, took silver in 3:32.05 ahead of Australia, who were making their first appearance in this discipline at the World Indoors since 1999.
Justyna Swiety Ersetic, the most experienced member of the Polish squad, gave her nation an early lead thanks to a 52.18 effort, putting her marginally ahead of USA&rsquo;s Hayes. But Lear soon gained a lead that the USA would not relinquish, handing over to Effong.
The 400m finalist opened up clear ground for the USA before 400m silver medallist Holmes &ndash; a proven anchor leg runner at major championships &ndash; produced a 51.47 split to secure gold.
Behind Poland and Australia, the Chinese team was roared to a fourth-place finish.
&ldquo;We've been running with each other since college, so we definitely get to know each other a lot,&rdquo; said Holmes. &ldquo;We don't get to see each other that much during the year, but every time we get together the goal is just to win. That's the highlight of the week for sure, another medal for team USA.&rdquo;

USA's women win 4x400m to claim final title of WIC Nanjing 25

The United States had already picked up a historic 1-2-3 in the men&rsquo;s individual 400m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 courtesy of Chris Bailey, Brian Faust and Jacory Patterson.
And with that trio again lining up in the 4x400m relay &ndash; joined by Elija Godwin &ndash; gold looked like being a mere formality.
But the Jamaican quartet of Rusheen McDonald, who claimed 2024 world indoor 400m bronze but struggled in the individual event this time around, plus Jasauna Dennis, Kimar Farquharson and Demar Francis ran them mightily close.
It provided a fifth gold of these championships for the US team and helped to cement their place at the top of the medal table.
The result also continued the US hegemony in this particular event. From 1993 to 2016, they claimed 10 of the 13 gold medals available in the men&rsquo;s 4x400m at the World Indoor Championships.
USA did not win at the past three editions but with normal service resumed in China, the nation has taken the tally of titles to 11 overall.
But this wasn&rsquo;t quite the race against the clock that many anticipated. Godwin set the tempo on leg one but did not pull out quite the gap he and his teammates would have hoped. Faust promptly disappeared off into the distance at the first changeover only to find himself also pegged back in the latter stages.
On leg three, Farquharson then closed the gap markedly on Patterson to at least add a frisson of doubt to what had long ago appeared a foregone conclusion as a race result.
But with individual gold medallist Bailey on the final leg, another US gold was assured. However, it wasn&rsquo;t until the final straight that he kicked clear to win by nearly two seconds in a season&rsquo;s best 3:03.13.
There was not to be a world record which the US quartet had been targeting in a final made up of five teams.
Some of the world&rsquo;s leading nations were absent from the final after opting to forgo it. But there was still calibre in the line-ups put forward by the US, Jamaica and Hungary in particular.
The Hungarians were embroiled in a fight for the final place on the podium with China but Attila Molnar, who could not upset the US 1-2-3 in the individual event, was too good for Ju Tianqi, who ran the final leg for the Chinese team.
Briefly, the home crowd in Nanjing dared to dream of a relay medal, that prospect lifting the noise inside the venue, only for Molnar, the European champion a few weeks back in Apeldoorn, killing both the home hope and the volume as he increased his pace towards the end of the final leg.

USA dominates men's 4x400m in Nanjing

After four podium finishes on the global and European stage over the past year, Mattia Furlani landed global gold by winning the long jump in Nanjing with 8.30m.
The 20-year-old Italian sailed out to that mark in the second round and it stood up as the best jump of the day &ndash; but only just.
Jamaica's Wayne Pinnock finished second with a fourth-round leap of 8.29m while Australia's Liam Adcock, contesting his first-ever indoor competition, claimed bronze with 8.28m.
Despite being beaten at three World Indoor Tour meetings this year, Olympic gold medallist and defending world indoor champion Miltiadis Tentoglou arrived in Nanjing hoping to add to his incredible medal collection, having amassed 11 titles at world, Olympic and European level in the past seven years.
At the half-way point, however, he sat in 10th place with a best of 7.91m.
European indoor silver medallist Furlani fouled on his opening attempt, which appeared to be a substantial jump, while Olympic silver medallist Wayne Pinnock opened with 8.20m. That lead was short-lived as Adcock quickly surpassed him with a leap of 8.28m, moving to the top of the standings.
Furlani, the world leader, responded with 8.30m in round two to claim the top spot. Pinnock and Adcock both produced leaps of 8.28m in round two, with Adcock having the advantage on countback.
Tentoglou finally found his rhythm in the fourth round, sailing out to 8.14m to move into fifth place behind Japan&rsquo;s Shunsuke Izumiya (8.21m).
Pinnock found an extra centimetre in the fourth round to leap 8.29m and move ahead of Adcock. Furlani didn&rsquo;t improve for the rest of the competition, but he backed up his leading mark with yet another 8.28m jump in round four.
Furlani becomes the first Italian man to win the long jump at the World Indoor Championships. The Olympic bronze medallist is already setting his sights on another gold medal at the forthcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
&ldquo;I'm so happy because this isn't a European medal, but it's a world medal,&rdquo; said Furlani. &ldquo;For me, it's amazing. Since last year, I've been trying to get this gold medal. Now I have it in my hands, it's a dream. Winning it is a big honour. Now I&rsquo;ll allow my body to recover and then return to training to prepare for Tokyo. That's the big goal of the year.&rdquo;
With his bronze medal, Oceania champion Adcock became the first Australian since Fabrice Lapierre in 2010 to win a long jump medal at the World Indoor Championships. The 28-year-old&rsquo;s decision to continue his athletics career has clearly paid off.
&ldquo;If you had told me last year that I&rsquo;d win a medal here, I probably wouldn't believe it,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I was on my verge of retirement in November and decided I'd come back, and now coming into this one with good form. I think it's the first major I've been to without having like big injuries. It was good to get out here and compete to my capability. Obviously it was really close at the end, but I am super happy to get a medal.&rdquo;

Furlani wins close long jump contest in Nanjing

Bronze, gold, gold, bronze, silver and now gold once again.
Tom Walsh&rsquo;s love affair with the World Athletics Indoor Championships show few signs of abating as the New Zealander picked up his third title and his sixth medal in all in the shot put.
You have to go back to 2012 for a time when the 31-year-old did not feature at all on the podium at the World Indoors despite this being his first indoor outing of the season.
Any sense that might see him lack the necessary rhythm and fluency to compete against the world&rsquo;s best were quickly dispelled. Historically, he has only once competed indoors at an event prior to these championships and again there was no sense of rust in his throwing action.
He took the lead with his opening throw and was never toppled for the duration of the competition, a season&rsquo;s best 21.65m enough for gold by three centimetres from Roger Steen, one of two US athletes in the final. The other, Adrian Piperi, took the bronze with a best of 21.48m.
For Walsh, it was a competitive return to form and fitness after the disappointment of last summer at the Paris Olympics.
The two-time Olympic bronze medallist suffered an adductor tear in that Olympic final, which ended his hopes of completing a hat-trick of Olympic medals eight years on from his first but also brought an abrupt close to his 2024 season as a result.
Outside the shot put circle, Walsh became a father for the first time in the wake of those Games and took off the entire month of October to be with his wife Dana and the couple&rsquo;s baby daughter.
But he resumed his off-season training, which involves a diet of 5,000 calories in order to keep up his required bulk, in November as well as his rehabilitation work to build for the briefest of indoor campaigns.
On paper, Italian duo Leonardo Fabbri and Zane Weir, were the leading throwers from the list of finalists in 2025 but neither could trouble the medal order.
Fabbri, a bronze medallist at the same event in Glasgow last year, could not get close to the 21.95m season&rsquo;s best he produced at the World Indoor Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Lievin last month. He was more than half a metre shy of that in Sunday&rsquo;s final.
Weir, meanwhile, ended up eighth with a best of 20.63m, some way off the sort of consistent levels he had thrown indoors in this season to date.

Walsh reclaims world indoor shot put title in Nanjing

World record-holder Devynne Charlton successfully defended her 60m hurdles title, winning a thrilling race of record depth in 7.72 at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
Before this world indoor final, the record number of athletes finishing under 7.80 in a single race was three. In Nanjing the top six all beat that mark, Ditaji Kambundji dipping for silver in 7.73 and Ackera Nugent getting bronze in 7.74.
The top six were separated by just 0.04. Pia Skrzyszowska was fourth in a Polish record of 7.74, USA&rsquo;s Grace Stark was fifth in the same time and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands was sixth in 7.76.
That time of 7.76 would have been enough to win 15 of the past 20 editions of the World Indoor Championships.
The field for the final was stacked.&nbsp;
Charlton got a great start and while her rivals tried hard to chase her down, the Bahamian held them off by only hundredths of a second to secure her second successive world indoor title, and her third world indoor medal overall after her silver from 2022.
Switzerland&rsquo;s Kambundji started as the fastest in the world this year thanks to the 7.67 European indoor record she set to win her European indoor title earlier this month &ndash; a time just 0.02 off the world indoor record set by Charlton at last year&rsquo;s World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.&nbsp;
This time they were just 0.01 apart, with Jamaica&rsquo;s Nugent following a further hundredth behind.
Nugent denied Skrzyszowska a medal by three thousandths of a second, though the 2024 world indoor bronze medallist did leave with the national record to her name.
&ldquo;It was a big deal for me to come here and show up, defend my title,&rdquo; said Charlton, who was eighth on the list of entries for Nanjing on season's best but peaked when it mattered the most. &ldquo;It was a big goal for me. It wasn't looking great, but I trusted the people around me and I was able to pull it off.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It's definitely super hard to defend a title at an event like this. The women always show up. To come away with a win against these ladies, it's really cool.&rdquo;
Nugent had averted disaster in the semifinals as she managed to stay on her feet despite hitting the final hurdle hard &ndash; so much so that the top of the barrier came completely away from the frame.
She managed to finish second in a race won by Skrzyszowska &ndash; 7.79 to 8.00. Visser won her semifinal in 7.81 to Charlton&rsquo;s 7.82, while the third semifinal was won by Stark in 7.72 from Kambundji on 7.76.
China&rsquo;s Wu Yanni missed out on a place in the final by just 0.01 but will take consolation from setting a national record of 8.01 &ndash; a time that places her fourth on the Asian all-time list &ndash; in front of a passionate home crowd.

Charlton retains 60m hurdles title in race of record depth in Nanjing

South Africa&rsquo;s Prudence Sekgodiso ran a world-leading indoor national record to win her country&rsquo;s first women&rsquo;s world indoor medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
The Olympic finalist clocked 1:58.40, her strong finish seeing her surge away to win gold ahead of Ethiopia&rsquo;s Nigist Getachew and Portugal&rsquo;s Patricia Silva. They all had the indoor races of their lives, Getachew running 1:59.63 and Silva an indoor national record of 1:59.80.
Sekgodiso delivered one of the biggest upsets at the WIC Nanjing 25, flipping the script to upstage Ethiopia&rsquo;s defending champion and Paris Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma to claim victory.
The event had already proven unpredictable, with several top contenders falling short in the semifinals, including US indoor champion Nia Akins and Olympic finalist Shafiqua Maloney. This set the stage for a somewhat unexpected outcome in the final.
Duguma and her teammate Getachew set a fast pace from the start, surging ahead in the first 200m with Getachew taking the lead and dictating the tempo.&nbsp;
The South African nearly stumbled while attempting to catch up with the Ethiopian duo but quickly regained her balance and composure. Finding her rhythm, she stayed close behind the leading pair. As the fast pace began to wear down her rivals, Sekgodiso capitalised on their fatigue, surging past them to seize control of the race.
The Olympic finalist was unstoppable as she sped towards the finish line to improve on her previous national record of 1:59.88 set in Karlsruhe and equalled in Lievin. Her medal was her country&rsquo;s first gold at the WIC Nanjing 25.&nbsp;
Sekgodiso&rsquo;s winning time is her fourth sub-two-minute run of the season and so fast was the race that even fourth- and fifth-place finishers Switzerland&rsquo;s Audrey Werro and newly crowned European indoor champion Anna Wielgosz set an national record of 1:59.81 and a PB of 2:00.34, respectively.
"It's a surprise. You have the world's fastest in the race, but I believed that I could make it, and to make it and grab that gold medal, I'm proud," said&nbsp;Sekgodiso. "I did dream of this, I've been working so hard for this. We have a long season ahead and I believe there's still more to come."
The World Indoor Championships in Nanjing marked Getachew&rsquo;s debut on the indoor circuit, and the Ethiopian will undoubtedly be satisfied to leave the Chinese city with her first global medal.
It was a historic outing for Portuguese champion Silva whose exploit comes 24 years after her father Rui Silva won the 1500m at the 2001 edition of the championships held in Lisbon.
"This is more than a dream, I'm so happy," she said. "Winning a medal 24 years after my Dad, I think my family is so proud. They teach me the values of being an athlete, to work a lot. I think they are super proud that I did it."

Sekgodiso on song to win 800m gold in Nanjing

Josh Hoey fought off the dual threat of Eliott Cretan and Elvin Canales to win a thrilling men&rsquo;s 800m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing on Sunday.
Hoey had been earmarked as the overwhelming favourite for gold after clocking 1:43.24 at the US Indoor Championships.
Only Wilson Kipketer had ever run faster for the distance indoors, and there were suggestions his world record of 1:42.67 from 1997 might well be under threat on the third and final day of action at these championships.
In the end, Hoey&rsquo;s winning time of 1:44.77 was some way short of that mark but this was more about a first major title of any kind than when the clock stopped.
Despite the pre-event favourite tag, this was far from a time trial and he had to scrap from the outset as Belgian Crestan and Hoey&rsquo;s US teammate Brendon Miller all tried to take the front of the field at the turn.
Hoey won that particular scrap before being forced to wrestle the lead back from Miller when he passed his teammate briefly at the halfway mark. That push seemed to leave Miller without the legs for the home straight for a captivating finale to the race.
Hoey kicked for the line but, in his dying strides, faded badly but did just enough to dip clear of Crestan and take gold by just 0.04. The Honduran-born Canales celebrated his bronze as though the title was his, launching his way around the track in a mix of smiles and tears in the immediate aftermath.
For Hoey, at the age of 25, it was finally a realisation of his talent on the global stage.
He had turned professional after setting a high school national record for the 800m all the way back in 2018. But in the ensuing years, he struggled to make his mark at his national championships, and with that the global events proving out of his reach.
He chopped and changed those guiding him, by his own admission working his way through five or six coaches before finally settling on the Australian Justin Rinaldi 18 months ago.
Rinaldi&rsquo;s major target was to hold back his athlete a little in training and get him to bide his time to get to a major outdoor final, which had been a target of Hoey in his very first year as a pro.
The patience finally began to pay off during this indoor season in particular. He raised some eyebrows by beating 2024 world indoor champion Bryce Hoppel at the Millrose Games back in February.
That run, combined with a North American record for the 1000m - his 2:14.48 the second-fastest time in history - as well as his impressive outing in the national championships seemed to put him a class apart from the rest of the six-man field in the Nanjing final.
But he needed all his pace, talent, experience and mental fortitude to hold off the various threats in the final.

Hoey holds his nerve to take 800m gold in Nanjing

Ethiopia&rsquo;s Gudaf Tsegay improved her own championship record to 3:54.86 to win the 1500m title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
Tsegay now has two world indoor 1500m titles to her name, both set with championship record-breaking performances, and her latest winning time is the fourth-fastest indoor women&rsquo;s 1500m in history behind her own world record of 3:53.09. She owns all four of the fastest performances of all time, two of them set in 2025, and she went into the championships as a big favourite following her 3:53.92 win in Lievin in February.
She led an Ethiopian top two, Diribe Welteji following her home for silver in 3:59.30 and Great Britain&rsquo;s Georgia Hunter Bell getting bronze in an indoor PB of 3:59.84. Australia's Georgia Griffith set an Oceanian indoor record of 4:00.80 in fourth.
Tsegay, also the world record-holder in the 5000m outdoors, contested three events &ndash; the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m &ndash; at the Paris Olympics and was disappointed after missing out on a medal in each of those disciplines.
She was back to her brilliant best in Nanjing.
&ldquo;It was not an easy race,&rdquo; said Tsegay, who won world 5000m gold in 2022 and the world 10,000m title in 2023. &ldquo;This was a fast time, so I'm very happy about that.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Athletes go through ups and downs, injuries, challenges &ndash; it's no problem. I prefer the indoors. For outdoors, I'll do the 800m or 10,000m, but indoors I like the 1500m.&rdquo;
Her passion for the event shows.
The 28-year-old went straight to the front of the race in Nanjing and was tracked early on by world 1500m silver medallist and world road mile champion Welteji.
Tsegay began to create a gap and Welteji was joined by Griffith, while Hunter Bell led a group behind them.
After a blistering start, Tsegay remained inside world record pace for more than half the race. Her win never looked in doubt, but the contest for the two other medals was on.
Hunter Bell closed the gap on Welteji and Griffith, before a fight for the finish line. Welteji managed to hold off her rivals and was rewarded with silver to match her world outdoor medal of the same colour from Budapest, and improve on her fifth-place finish from Glasgow last year.
Hunter Bell also matched the colour of medal that she achieved at the Olympic Games in Paris, bagging bronze by half a second ahead of Griffith.
The British athlete later called it &ldquo;redemption&rdquo;.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I really wanted to bounce back,&rdquo; said Hunter Bell, who finished fourth at the European Indoor Championships.
&ldquo;When they went off, I just felt it was fast. I was not wanting to use all my energy too quickly and I was like, &lsquo;be patient&rsquo;. It's very brave of her (Tsegay) to run that fast. This medal means a lot. I just want to get as many medals as possible, and I love championship racing.&rdquo;

Tsegay runs championship record to win 1500m title in Nanjing

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, at long last, has a world title over 1500m.
One day after earning his first world indoor title by taking 3000m gold, the Norwegian completed the distance double in Nanjing by winning the 1500m, becoming just the second man in history to win two gold medals at the same World Indoors, following in the footsteps of Haile Gebrselassie who achieved the 1500m/3000m double in 1999.
The 24-year-old controlled the pace and held off his challengers to take the title in 3:38.79. Britain's Neil Gourley came through to take silver in 3:39.07 ahead of surprise bronze medallist Luke Houser of the USA.
The two-time world champion over 5000m had already made headlines earlier in the season by breaking the world indoor mile and 1500m records in Li&eacute;vin.
Eager to claim a long-awaited world gold in the 1500m after missing out at the 2022 World Indoors, and at the past three editions of the outdoor World Championships, the multiple world record-holder adopted a slightly different strategy. Instead of his usual position at the back of the pack, he started three spots from the rear.
With six laps remaining, Ingebrigtsen moved to the middle of the field before taking the lead with about four laps to go. Sweden&rsquo;s Samuel Pihlstrom, running on the outside, attempted to overtake the two-time Olympic champion but lost ground as Ingebrigtsen maintained his commanding position to become the first man in this century to win the 1500m/3000m double at the World Indoors.
Behind the six-time European gold medallist, a battle for the remaining podium spots unfolded. Great Britain&rsquo;s Neil Gourley held close but was overtaken by Portugal&rsquo;s Isaac Nader, who surged into second place as the bell rang. Ingebrigtsen responded by shifting gears, accelerating smoothly to extend his lead. Gourley and USA&rsquo;s Luke Houser stayed consistent, securing silver and bronze, while Nader finished just outside the podium in fourth with a time of 3:39.58.
&ldquo;Of course this is something special,&rdquo; said Ingebrigtsen. &ldquo;It's very difficult to compare yourself against history and what others are doing. I'm only focusing on myself. I think I can do more, so I'll try to maximise that and grab the opportunity given to me. The goal is to participate as much as I can. It's definitely important to use the opportunities and not take anything for granted.&rdquo;
Gourley who narrowly missed out on a podium placement at the European indoors, was pleased with his silver medal.
&ldquo;I'm really happy with this&rdquo;, he said. &ldquo;I came here to right some of the wrongs of a couple of weeks ago at the Europeans, where I feel like I didn't compete or represent myself too well. This week in Nanjing, I just really felt like myself. I had a game plan, which was to stay at the back of the race until it started moving. I waited for the big move and then committed to that move. And it worked.&rdquo;
Winning a medal at his first World Indoors was a dream come true for Houser.
&ldquo;I came into this race, stepping on the line, I knew I could I could get a medal,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I knew I was capable of doing it, but actually going out there and doing it is a whole different thing. I&rsquo;m just so happy I could get that done. It's a dream come true to be out there competing with the world's best.&rdquo;
