Gabapentin is a structural analogue of the neurotransmitter y-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Diabetic rats were either untreated or treated daily for 2 weeks with gabapentin (50 mg/kg/day by gavage; Spectrum Chemical Manufacturing Corp, Gardena) starting 6 weeks following STZ injection.

A Gabapentin and its close relative pregabalin are used to treat epilepsy and severe nerve pain, but it's also used "off label" for migraine, alcohol dependency, hot flushes and restless leg syndrome.
