The standard is intended to help reduce energy loss caused by AC to DC conversions, allow for more flexible uses of space and advance the use of energy-saving technologies, like LEDs, in commercial buildings.

By creating an open-power platform for power, interior infrastructure, controls and other devices, the standard allows AC power to be converted to DC power at the room level, eliminating the need for wasteful AC to DC conversions at the device level.
