Wacky Brrap packer Dappy from N-Dubz complained last week that The X Factor is harming new acts who are trying to establish themselves. As the albums chart top spot rotates from Alex to Cheryl to JLS, it's hard to disagree with him. However, one of the few acts who have broken through to the mainstream in 2009 and look capable of holding their own alongside Cowell's creations are Tennessee emo-poppers Paramore.

Thanks to the backing of the Twilight phenomenon, their Brand New Eyes album has already landed them a No.1 - dislodging Madonna no less. Packed with hits like new single 'Brick By Boring Brick', it's no surprise that Hayley Williams's guitar chuggers have struck gold. Infectious, deliciously dark ("Well go get your shovel, and we'll dig a deep hole"), and packed with more energy than a Jedward dance routine – Williams sounds downright tremendous leading the "ba-ba-ba" climax – this should provide a welcome edge at the top end of the charts.
