Tottenham 3-1 Dinamo Bucharest
By Dan Warren

Jermain Defoe
Defoe's double helped Spurs to an easy win
Tottenham cruised to an easy victory over Dinamo Bucharest to secure top spot in Uefa Cup Group B.

Dimitar Berbatov netted on 16 minutes, lashing in from 20 yards after keeper Uladzimir Hayeu's poor throw out.

Jermain Defoe, who had already hit the bar, added a second before half-time as he impressively outpaced the visitors' defence before slotting home.

Defoe sidefooted home his second after the break, before Jean-Philippe Mendy grabbed an injury-time consolation.

Spurs began knowing they only needed a draw to guarantee top spot in Group B.

But they played from the outset as though they were keen to teach Dinamo a footballing lesson.

Tom Huddlestone's early effort was tipped round the post by Dinamo keeper Hayeu, while the keeper had to be alert to tip a Defoe cross out of the reach of Berbatov.

But it was the Bulgarian striker who gave Spurs the lead on 16 minutes after an awful error by Hayeu.

The keeper threw the ball out to the feet of the Tottenham striker, who walloped it back with interest into the top corner.

Hayeu redeemed himself as he tipped a Defoe shot on to the crossbar.

But Defoe soon found himself on the scoresheet with a goal of utmost simplicity.

Paul Robinson picked out the striker with a goal kick, and Defoe went around Stefan Radu before outpacing the visitors' defence and finishing low beyond Hayeu.

Whatever was said in the Dinamo changing room at half-time did not work as Spurs increased their lead five minutes after the restart following a fine move.

Defoe got the final touch, sidefooting home after Aaron Lennon was set up by Berbatov only to see his shot parried by Hayeu.

Still the chances came for Spurs - Didier Zokora was denied when his stinging drive was parried by Hayeu, while Huddlestone sent a powerful drive inches wide.

But the Dinamo goal led a charmed life as Benoit Assou-Ekotto sent a free-kick against the inside of the post, and Calum Davenport saw a goalbound shot deflected over the bar.

There was time for a Dinamo reply, however, as Mendy took advantage of a fortuitous deflection to slide home for an ultimately meaningless consolation.

  • Spurs boss Martin Jol:
"We didn't want to get a drop-out from the Champions League, it's why we wanted to be number one in the group.

"Europe has certainly been a big challenge for us and a great experience. I am very pleased.

"I think we did well. Dinamo Bucharest are 14 points ahead of everyone (in the Romanian league) and they will almost certainly play in the Champions League next year. If they are as strong as they are in Romania we knew they must have a good team.

"I don't know what happened to them here but maybe you have to give us credit as well."
