Stuart Broad became the youngest England bowler to take 100 one-day wickets

England put in a commanding display to win their seventh one-day international in a row and gain a 2-0 lead in the five-match series against Australia.

Stuart Broad took 4-44 on his 24th birthday to restrict Ricky Ponting's side to a moderate 239-7 in Cardiff despite Cameron White's 86 not out.

Eoin Morgan (52) was the hosts's top scorer, while Paul Collingwood (48) became England's record ODI run-scorer.

There was a late wobble but England won by four wickets with 28 balls to spare.

The next match in the series is a morning start at Old Trafford on Sunday, where if England win on the same day their footballers take on Germany in Bloemfontein, they will have secured the series at the earliest opportunity.

Ponting won the toss and chose to bat first, although all five completed ODIs in the Welsh capital had been won by the chasing side.

Australia's captain was also without his fastest bowler, Ryan Harris, because of a groin injury, and although his absence created an opening for leg-spinner Steve Smith, Ponting made a second change, replacing the 19-year-old seamer Josh Hazlewood with Clint McKay of Victoria.

The Aussies needed early wickets and plenty of control when England began their straightforward chase, but McKay offered neither.

Two no-balls in his first over provided two free-hit opportunities for Andrew Strauss, and the England skipper drove the first handsomely over the bowler's head for six before slamming the second high over wide mid-off for four.

Even the loss of Craig Kieswetter in the third over to Doug Bollinger did not derail England in the slightest, as Strauss and Kevin Pietersen put on 68 from 76 balls for the second wicket.

Pietersen looked set for something substantial when his innings was cut short on 33 by a stunning one-handed leap and catch by Ponting at short midwicket off Smith.

And when Strauss, having moved sweetly to 51, gave Nathan Hauritz a catch off his own bowling the score was 109-3 and some rebuilding was needed.

That came in a stand of 84 between Morgan and Collingwood, the latter overtaking Alec Stewart's mark of 4,677 to become the top English run-scorer in ODIs in his 179th match.

With so much time to get their runs they could afford to build patiently, but once they felt they had broken the back of the chase the opportunity was there for some big shots.

Collingwood hit McKay for six over wide long-on and Smith for four in the same area before chopping Bollinger onto his stumps.

Then James Hopes got Luke Wright out the same way after being clubbed for two off-side boundaries by the Sussex man.

That left 29 more needed from the last 10 overs, but with no further addition to England's total Morgan edged a fine Bollinger delivery behind and Australia were into the lower order, needing four more wickets to pull the game out of the fire.

But Graeme Swann and Tim Bresnan showed no sign of nerves as they closed on the target, Swann finishing the game with a lofted off-drive six off McKay.

The first two overs of the match had given Australia, and Shane Watson in particular, such a good start.

The blond all-rounder took 13 off the first over and 10 off the second as the new white ball did what it tends to do these days - absolutely nothing.

Collingwood became the highest run-getter for England in ODIs

Gradually, England's seamers exerted control, and it was the short ball that did the damage, quite literally when Tim Paine took a nasty blow on the gloves off Bresnan.

Softened up, he duly fell to Broad in the next over, the 11th, with Australia's total on 51.

That was a bit of a lucky strike for Broad, a leg-side tickle easily held by Kieswetter as he became the youngest England bowler to take 100 ODI wickets.

But his next two wickets were down to fine pace bowling. Ponting edged a ball just outside off-stump before Michael Clarke, with short-leg in place, compliantly fended a ferocious delivery to the catcher, Swann.

Watson rarely looked anything like as troubled as his team-mates, swinging Wright away for two boundaries in the over between Broad's second and third wickets.

But when the Queenslander top-edged a Wright bouncer for a tumbling Kieswetter to claim his third catch Australia were 94-4 in the 22nd over.

By then, White should also have been back in the pavilion with just three runs to his name but Wright had over-stepped when having him superbly caught behind by a diving Kieswetter.

Although White batted to the end, he rarely batted with any great purpose until changing his bat for the final 10 balls of the match to thump James Anderson for six, and Bresnan for two fours.

Anderson bowled much better than figures of 1-63 suggested, his wicket that of Mike Hussey who was bowled for a ponderous 14 by a wicked delivery that straightened off the wicket.

The most energetic innings was provided by Smith (41 off 53 balls), in a stand of 84 with White for the sixth wicket.

But at the halfway stage England looked warm favourites and their batsmen duly completed the job.
