Today, Kannauj Attar House, is one of the biggest and oldest attar shops in the city, owned and run by Anwar Raees Ansari.

For Ansari, selling attar is not a business, but a way of life.

In 1954, King of Saudi Arabia Saud bin Abdulaziz, visited Pakistan and it was at that time, narrated Ansari, that the king bought attar from his father's shop.

According to Ansari, countless small attar shops had opened at Jama Cloth Market by that time but they would still buy their products from Kannauj Attar House.

There are shops brimming with aromatic goodies from scented oils, incense and attar of the finest quality.

I walked past an old perfume house, dodging the crowds, stopped at an ancient shop selling attar, which was emanating a mixture of smells from incense, coriander, fresh dung on the street and of the next door sweet shop.

Attar is completely organic and can be dabbed directly on skin.

Every attar has a distinctive therapeutic quality, like it is best to use attar of Hina and Musk during the months of winter as they increase the body temperature.

Mr Maccaba promised 39-year-old Alain Attar "$1million, in the bank, tax free".

Mr Attar, he said, could even afford to "be a playboy in the south of France for a while".

Meanwhile, the deal would "set free" Mrs Attar, leaving Mr Maccaba to "love her for ever".
