Then, at 17 or 18 miles, running past another of the pubs that line the route and attract vast numbers of well-wishers on the day of the marathon, suddenly a chap came charging out of the pub and started running beside Bowes. In reply to Bowes' "Where on earth have you been?" the runner announced that he had just had his fifth pint of beer while watching the last 10 minutes of a football semifinal on the pub television.

Bowes' whole show was something of a frothy, open-air confection.
