mulligan
1. A type of stew said to have been prepared by homeless vagrants in the US in the early 1900s comprising whatever different kinds of food they had available. Also called "mulligan stew." We made a mulligan out of some cans of fruits and vegetables, a few packets of dried meat, and whatever edible vegetation we could forage in the area near our makeshift camp.
2. By extension, any combination of varied and disparate elements forming a heterogeneous whole. The legislative bill contains a mulligan of social measures aimed at making life easier for those in the working and lower classes. This community has always been something of a mulligan, attracting people from all sorts of different backgrounds.
3. golf A stroke that is not counted against one's play, as when one misses the ball or makes a poor shot. Whoops—missed the ball entirely on that swing! Mind if I take a mulligan?
