To surpass or outshine something in some action or trait. Well, Greg got the promotion because his work really exceeded yours in quality. After the hurricane, that volunteer group far exceeded our local government in responsiveness. I was actually there to scout the third baseman, but the starting pitcher exceeded him in raw talent and caught my eye instead.
