1. To die. How are we going to tell the kids that their fish croaked while they were at school? I was so sick with the flu that I seriously thought I was going to croak. A dead squirrel in the middle of a busy street? Yeah, I don't think it croaked of natural causes.
2. To kill someone or something. We all watched in horror as the lion croaked its prey. Dude, this is really dangerous. If he catches on that you're the informant, he'll have one of his thugs croak you. We're in enemy territory now, so trust no one—they'd all croak us if given the chance.
croak out
To say something in a low, gruff, possibly emotional voice. A noun or pronoun can be used between "croak" and "out." I wanted to say a few remarks at the funeral, but I had a hard time croaking them out. I got so emotional during my Best Man speech that I ended up having to croak out the end of it. We all burst into tears as Dad croaked out the news that our dog had died.
