Paria

 

a gulf of the Atlantic Ocean on the northeastern coast of South America, in Venezuela. It is separated from the ocean by the island of Trinidad and by the Peninsula de Paria. It is connected to the ocean by the Dragon’s Mouth channel to the north and the Serpent’s Mouth to the east. It has a maximum depth of 22 m. There are strong tidal currents of more than 3.5 km per hour. On the northeastern shore is the port of Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.


Paria

 

a peninsula in northeastern South America, in Venezuela. It adjoins a gulf to the north by the same name. Paria is separated from the island of Trinidad by the Dragon’s Mouth channel. It is about 120 km long. The northern part is mountainous, with elevations up to 1,254 m, while the southern part is lowlands. The climate is subequatorial, with humid summers. On the northern slopes of the mountains are xerophyte meadows and underbrush; on the southern slopes, evergreen forests. Cacao is cultivated in the southwest.
