Toal, whose appointment became eective this month, will take full accountability for the business from October.

In a letter circulated through the diocese, Bishop Toal said: "The funeral liturgy in the Catholic Church brings great consolation and hope to those who have lost a loved one because we proclaim the Resurrection of the Lord and our hope of eternal life.

Mr Toal said Thompson has a partner, who was also present at the event where he committed the offence.
