Included in the Long-term Sustainability Guidelines agreed by COPUOS last June is the need to raise awareness among the general public.

At COPUOS meetings in 2017 and 2018, a wide range of countries made statements regarding their interests in and political positions regarding space resources, with the list including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the Russian Federation, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

As mentioned above, up until now there have been only five treaties made in the COPUOS: 1) the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, 2) the 1968 Rescue and Return Agreement, 3) the 1972 Liability Convention, 4) the 1975 Registration Convention, and 5) the 1979 Moon Agreement (Chart 1).

"As a COPUOS member-state, the Philippines recognizes the significance of the 1967 Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and other Celestial Bodies, aimed at the peaceful exploration and exploitation of outer space for the benefit of all countries, and the Declaration on International Cooperation in the Exploitation and Use of Outer Space for the Benefit and Interests of all States," it added.

The Conference also provides a platform for the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), which will gather for its 61 st session and high-level segment on June 20 and 21, before resuming its regular sessions.

She also said that the ministry has decided to apply for membership in the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space known as COPUOS.

Outer space activities are largely governed through the United Nations' international treaties, which are developed through the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space ("COPUOS").

Right after the launch of first satellite and, keeping in view the importance of peaceful space-related activities in 1958, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established an eighteen-member ad hoc Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
