How to Paint a Mountain Wall Mural for a Kid's Bedroom

This mountain wall art project will bring joyful color and texture to any room. Just paint overlapping triangles in a coordinated palette to create this fun accent wall.

STEP 1

Prep

Start by cleaning the wall or walls where you'll be painting your mural and lay down a drop cloth to catch any paint drips or spills. 

Plan your mountain pattern colors and determine where you want to place your peaks.

STEP 2

Apply Tape

Create your mountain range. For each mountain, use two long pieces of painter's tape that meet at the top. Have fun with it and incorporate a variety of sizes. Your mountains can even span across multiple walls.

STEP 3

Paint First Color

Using a brush, apply color to your first foreground mountain. We started with Lime Granita SW 6715. If you're applying more than one coat, do so now.

Tip: Make sure your paint overlaps the inner side of the tape line. Softly feather away the paint along the edge to avoid seeing a thick layer of paint later on.

STEP 4

Paint Remaining Colors

Repeat step 3 to apply color to your remaining mountains, working foreground to background. We used Champagne SW 6644, Comfort Gray SW 6205 and Breaktime SW 6463.

STEP 5

Remove Tape

After you've finished painting, remove the tape while it's still slightly damp.

Tip: For best results, remove the tape while the paint is still wet. If you decide to remove the tape after the paint has dried, you may want to use a craft knife and a straight edge to score the line before pulling the tape.

STEP 6

Personalize

Allow your work to fully dry, then decorate it with whatever flourishes you choose. We used metallic silver adhesive decals to add dimension to our mountains.
