Hearing Health Project: Impactful partnership with Wiki Movement Brazil

The Hearing Health Project and Wiki Movement Brazil joined forces in 2022 to create innovative educational programs and outreach activities aimed at promoting hearing health. The project was made possible by Research – Regular/FAPESPA and it resulted in the development of a variety of programs and extension activities focused on different topics within the hearing health spectrum.

A total of 12 institutions actively participated in these initiatives, demonstrating a high level of interinstitutional collaboration. Partnerships were established with national and international institutions such as the University of São Paulo – USP, Federal University of Santa Catarina – UFSC, University of Montreal, Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de São Paulo – FCMSCSP, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte – UFRN, Federal University of Paraiba – UFPB, State University of Health Sciences of Alagoas – UNCISAL, Global Coalition of Parents of Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, State University of Paraná – UNESPAR, Tuiuti University of Paraná – UTP, World Health Organization, and World Hearing Forum to support these educational programs and extension activities in hearing health.

A grand total of 868 articles were edited during the course of this project. This number is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved, who were committed to improving the knowledge base for society. To achieve this, 5,590 edits were made to enhance the quality and depth of information, making it more accessible to a wider audience. This was possible thanks to the active participation of 602 editors, who shared a common goal of promoting hearing health awareness and education. Their diverse knowledge and perspectives contributed immensely to the quality of the content produced, providing a broad spectrum of understandings and experiences that enriched the available material.

Additionally, 1,810 references were added to the articles, which reinforced the credibility and reliability of the information provided. This documentation effort not only increased the quality of the content, but also supported the educational mission of the project, ensuring that readers had access to accurate and well-founded information. Furthermore, images played an important role in enhancing and understanding the content. The project stood out significantly with 407 new images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, which complemented the entries with visual information and provided readers with a more immersive and intuitive way to connect with the topics covered.

The educational programs and extension activities in hearing health represent a significant milestone in the collaboration between the educational sector and Wiki Movement Brazil. These initiatives not only promote awareness and education about hearing health, but also exemplify the power of community collaboration in the dissemination of science and free knowledge.

The Wiki Movement Brazil is celebrating another partnership with a Brazilian university to promote wiki-education

Wiki Movement Brazil has been instrumental in forming strategic partnerships in the field of wiki-education. Their goal is to create a network of educators who are committed to integrating Wikimedia projects into academic programs. Recently, they partnered with the UERJ Digital Humanities Laboratory (LaHDUERJ), headed by Professor Alejandra Judith Josiowicz.

This collaboration aims to enhance the digital literacy of undergraduate and postgraduate students and disseminate Brazilian scientific production globally. The partnership also aims to improve the quality of information available about intellectual women on Wikipedia.

Wiki Movement Brazil conducted research on the needs of Scientific Research Groups to be better housed at Wikiversity

Wiki Movement Brazil has set a goal for 2024 to launch a campaign aimed at improving the housing conditions of Scientific Research Groups at Wikiversity. To achieve this, WMB has developed a survey to understand the formats used by Wikiversity, the types of accessible information, and the main needs of Research Groups. The survey includes groups that are already using Wikiversity, as well as Scientific Research Groups registered with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) that have not yet explored this tool.

The research aims to address the general characteristics of Portuguese-speaking Wikiversity, its resources, and the possibilities of using it to strengthen a community in favor of free knowledge. It also highlights the challenges faced in achieving this purpose. The research presents an overview of the situation of Scientific Research Groups in Brazil and the lack of infrastructure to support the allocation of resources and the construction of a community of researchers in favor of open science. It also connects these two points with the context of risks to academic freedom and free knowledge due to the domination of digital technologies by large private corporations. The methodology adopted for the research includes the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The research report will provide an overview of the opportunities and potential for strengthening scientific culture with the use of Wikiversity as a repository for Research Groups in the country.

The research is available here (in Portuguese), and a summary of its content will soon be available in English.
