Earth System Predictability Across Timescales (ESPAT) workshop on solar physics coming this September

Calling all space weather and solar physics community members! NSF NCAR will be hosting a one-day workshop on Sept. 9 in Boulder, Colorado, focused on the solar physics and space weather aspects of Earth system predictability. This ESPAT workshop will engage solar physics and space weather community members unable to attend the April workshop.

Save the Date for the Friends of the National Center's Science Stride 5k!

The Friends of the National Center Science Stride 5K kicks off its first run/walk this year on Sept. 14 at the Boulder Reservoir! The race will start at 1 p.m. The Science Stride 5k brings together our community for a common cause: Inspiring the next generation of scientists! This event provides an excellent opportunity for everyone who believes in the importance of STEM education to come together and support Friends of the National Center. Runners and walkers of all abilities are encouraged to join, and there are virtual participation options available.

The rise of MPAS, our next-generation atmospheric model

A flexible, next-generation atmospheric model with the capability to accurately model weather, both regionally and globally, has been garnering increasing interest from user groups around the world, including weather forecasters, government agencies, climate scientists, private companies, and beyond. The Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) is one of the tools NSF NCAR is investing in to help bridge a gap that exists between high-resolution regional weather modeling and low-resolution global climate modeling.

The swirl of a hurricane from space

Spinning up hurricane communications

Forecasters can use images in social media to better communicate weather related hazards of hurricanes, according to a pair of new studies. Scientists analyzed 2017 Twitter (now X) data related to two hurricanes – Harvey and Irma. The researchers found that forecast information communicated in the early stages of storm development, when the threat posed by a hurricane is uncertain, sets the stage for how people react to subsequent warning messages.

Artificial climate control might become ineffective

One regional geoengineering proposal for alleviating the extreme heat effects of global warming, the brightening of marine clouds to reflect more solar energy to space over different limited areas, could work in present-day conditions but may become ineffective in the future, according to new research.

Climate models estimate carbon cycling through plants

The carbon stored globally by plants is shorter-lived and more vulnerable to climate change than previously thought, according to a new study. The findings have implications for the role of flora in mitigating climate change, including the potential for vegetation-based carbon removal projects such as mass tree-planting.

Heat waves increase risk of preterm, early-term birth

As heat waves become more frequent and intense, mothers are facing increased risk of preterm and early-term labor, according to new research. This is jeopardizing the health and well-being of their babies. An analysis of 53 million births that occurred in the 50 most populous U.S. metropolitan areas from 1993 to 2017 showed the rates of preterm and early-term births increased when local temperatures were abnormally hot for more than four consecutive days.
