Elektronska spinska rezonanca

Elektronska spinska rezonanca ili elektronska paramagnetna rezonanca (ESR, EPR) proučava mikrotalasno zračenje koje je emitirano ili apsorbirano od nesparenih elektrona u magnetnom polju. Spin elektronima daje magnetni moment. Spareni elektroni poništavaju svoje magnetne momente, pa elektronsku spinsku rezonancu pokazuju samo molekule koje imaju nesparene elektrone. Elektronska spinska rezonanca funkcionira na isti način kao i nuklearna magnetna rezonanca, samo se umjesto jezgara detektiraju nespareni elektroni. Budući da elektroni imaju puno veći magnetni moment od jezgara, potrebno je slabije magnetsko polje i veća frekvencija. ESR je jako osjetljiva: može detektirati vrlo niske koncentracije slobodnih radikala, manje od jedan dio na milion.
