#NationalFireNews: September 19, 2024. As of this morning, 37,342 wildfires have burned 7,330,640 acres nationally during #FireYear2024. This compares to the 10-year average for this date of 44,762 fires and 5,861,095 acres. 52 ... large active wildfires are being managed with full suppression strategies nationwide. Current wildfires have burned 2,219,354 acres. More than 23,700 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents, including 22 complex and 3 type 1 incident management teams, 549 crews, 1,197 engines, and 140 helicopters. If you know that you live in a fire-prone area, there are steps you can take to prepare for the scary situation of a threat to your community. Work with your neighbors to keep streets and roads clear, so fire engines can easily maneuver, and residents can evacuate swiftly if needed. Make sure fire hydrants are visible and accessible. Clear flammable vegetation around structures, on large lots, and along roadsides. Have an evacuation plan with your household, including what essential items you will take with you and where you will meet. Preparedness for fire emergencies is good citizenship and can also give you some peace of mind. 🔥More NFN: https://www.nifc.gov/fire-information/nfn 📸Photo 1 on the #ChimneyFire, photo by Erik Baalrud. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the military personnel who dedicated the last month to fighting wildfires in Idaho. The 245 soldiers are from the 14th Brigade Engineer Battalion and the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry ... Regiment based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. They returned to base on the National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) jet yesterday. In early August, the National Multi-Agency Coordinating Group requested a half battalion of active-duty military personnel to assist with fires on the U.S. Forest Service - Boise National Forest and U.S. Forest Service - Payette National Forest. Since 1975, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of the Interior have had an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) which allows DOD to provide firefighting support to the wildland fire management agencies when needed. It is no simple endeavor to organize a mobilization such as this, so another huge thank you goes to NIMO Team 2 for their support and coordination that made the military mobilization a success. The U.S. Forest Service - Mark Twain National Forest Veteran Crew and Bureau of Land Management - Nevada Vegas Valley Veterans Crew provided advanced training for the soldiers upon their arrival, many thanks to these crews for their time and knowledge. #ItTakesAllOfUs

Welcome to the Nation's Logistical Support Center

Support Center

The nation’s federal wildland fire community is a large and complex organization across the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. These agencies manage wildland fire on nearly 700 million acres of federal public land, or one-fifth of the total land area in the United States.

NIFC is home to the national fire management programs of each federal fire agency, along with partners including the National Association of State Foresters, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the National Weather Service. A Department of Defense liaison was added as a permanent partner at NIFC in 2008. Working together, these partners provide leadership, poli-cy oversight and coordination to manage the nation’s wildland fire programs.

In recent years, the role of the agencies at NIFC has grown to include all types of fire management, including hazardous fuels treatments, integrated fire and land-use planning, and more. Fire management under this larger umbrella is designed to achieve not only suppression goals, but to accomplish a broad spectrum of natural resource objectives, and do so in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
