NSF NCAR CISL accepting large-scale allocation requests for Derecho system & Casper cluster

NSF NCAR's Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) is now accepting large-scale allocation requests from university-based researchers for the Derecho system as well as the Casper data analysis and visualization cluster. CISL is actively seeking projects that can take advantage of Derecho’s 328 NVIDIA A100 GPUs while including the Casper system in work plans. Casper provides resources for data analysis and visualization activities and single-node jobs.

Requests are due Sept. 10.

Registrations OPEN for the one-day ESPAT space weather workshop

Register for the Sept. 9 ESPAT focused on solar physics and space weather aspects of Earth system predictability. NSF NCAR's one-day workshop will be in Boulder, Colorado, with a virtual option and is tailored to solar physics and space weather community members unable to attend the April workshop.

Register here by Aug. 19.

Dampening the seeds of hurricanes

Increased atmospheric moisture may alter critical weather patterns over Africa, making it more difficult for the predecessors of many Atlantic hurricanes to form, according to a new study published this month. The research team led by our scientists used an innovative model that allows for higher-resolution simulations of hurricane formation than ever before.
