(WLUK) -- Strong thunderstorms rolled their way through Northeast Wisconsin Tuesday during the morning and midday hours, bringing soaking rain, high winds and lightning.

Rain amounts were generally between 1/2 inch and 1.5 inches. There were also a few small hail reports mixed in with the strongest thunderstorms.

Residents in Kewaunee are picking up the pieces after those high winds tore through their city. With wind speeds up to 60 miles per hour, trees and debris littered roadways.

Leah Haberli said it's a rarity in Kewaunee.

"It was a lot of wind," Haberli explained. "I mean, the trees were just going wild. It was amazing, I haven’t seen that before.”

Many homeowners took to the streets to check on their neighbors and clean up the mess.

“Before we even touched our yard, we drove around and asked all of our neighbors if they were okay," Eric Pribek told us. "We drove around to a couple restaurants, to see if everybody was okay. We checked on everybody. That’s what people do in Kewaunee. Check on each other.”

Stacey Melotte recounted to FOX 11 her experience with the storm, which landed a tree on the corner of her house.

“I saw the tree crack, the big walnut tree, which is this one," she said, pointing at the tree in her front yard. "Which belongs in the backyard about 60 feet in the air."

If downed trees weren't bad enough, the storm caused power outages across the city.

Tracy Nollenberg, Kewaunee County's emergency management director, said they’re working hard to resolve any outages.

“I did see a lot of trees down in a lot of roads. With that, we are reminding residents to stay off the roads in the city of Kewaunee," she said. "Let our emergency workers do their job. That way, power can be restored at a quicker pace.”

Residents are already looking towards the future.

“I’d like to give my appreciate to the Kewaunee Fire Department, all the rescue, the police, WPS and everyone who is trying to get things back on track here," said Pribek. "I think we should be good by tomorrow, hopefully. Everything should be back to normal.”

It wasn't just Kewaunee that was hit. Communities across the area experienced damage from the storm, mainly split trees and downed branches. Others saw toppled flag poles, swing sets and even city population signs.
