MONROE, Mich. (WTVG) - Police arrested a woman accused of abandoning one of her toddlers in Monroe, Michigan.

According to the Monroe Public Safety Department, officials are looking to file a felony child abandonment charge against a 26-year-old woman who was not named.

Officials said the woman from the Downriver area came to Monroe with her 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. She met a Monroe resident, who allowed her to stay at her home for a few days.

The friend and witnesses told police the 26-year-old mother of two took off on Tuesday with her son, leaving the daughter behind. Investigators eventually found she was at a hotel near the Detroit airport. Romulus Police arrested her and brought her back to Monroe, where she was booked into jail.

Police say she admitted to detectives that she knowingly left her daughter with strangers.

Authorities took protective custody of the girl, and eventually both of the woman’s children were reunited and turned over to family members.

The agency said the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services were helpful in the situation and will continue investigating the case.
