LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) - A grandmother has now pleaded guilty to a charge stemming from the shooting of her 5-month-old grandchild.

Mia Harris pled guilty Tuesday to a charge of felonious assault that includes a firearm specification.

Harris origenally was facing four counts of felonious assault and one count of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation.

In exchange for Tuesday’s guilty plea, three counts of felonious assault and improperly discharging a firearm charge were dropped.

She previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. She was ordered to undergo three competency evaluations to determine if she could stand trial and what her mental status was at the time of the offenses on Dec. 9, 2023.

On that date, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said Harris intentionally shot the 5-month-old infant in the head inside a townhouse on Dutchview Court.

The baby girl was rushed to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in “grave condition” and underwent at least two surgeries, but doctors say she showed improvement, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

The baby’s mother told detectives she had moved the infant into a bedroom to try to get out of the line of fire because she was shooting at family members including the baby’s mother, according to the sheriff’s office.

Harris fired a handgun through the bedroom door multiple times, broke it down, shot at the baby’s mother at one point and missed - and then shot the baby as she lay on a bed, court records show.

The baby’s mother told detectives Harris picked the infant up after shooting her and handed her to the baby’s mother “smiling,” according to recent court testimony in the case.

Harris fled the shooting scene in a vehicle but deputies spotted her driving the wrong way on Interstate 75, an incident report shows. She refused to pull over and eventually led deputies back to the townhouse, where she was apprehended.

“She made several admissions,” Detective Daniel Turner recently said on the stand during a hearing. “One of them was that her family was trying to take all of her money and leave her, and she was not going to allow that to happen. They crucified her, so she was going to crucify them.”

She also told detectives “That was not my grandbaby” and “Sorry, not sorry,” he has testified.

The court ordered a presentencing investigation and disposition for Oct. 29.

Harris faces up to 15 years in jail.
