Academic Service Learning

Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. High schools, colleges and universities partner with organizations like the American Red Cross to foster an environment where students learn about their communities by taking action through service. While providing volunteer service in their communities, students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world.

AS-L is a common requirement in nursing and public health curricula; however, students of any discipline can engage in and benefit from AS-L. At the Red Cross, AS-L national relationships are led by the Office of the Chief Nurse, but students from all disciplines are welcome. Volunteer opportunities vary by location and may be in-person or virtual.

There is a suite of independent learning opportunities for Academic Service-Learning volunteers. Topics include:

Information for Students

An Academic Service-Learning project with the Red Cross can expand your horizons and make you better prepared for your career ahead. You’ll develop interpersonal and leadership skills and gain real-world experience related to your field of study – all while contributing to the strength and resiliency of your community.

It’s Not Just for Nursing Students

Although AS-L is most commonly required in nursing and public health curricula, all students can benefit from AS-L. Here are some ways you can participate in AS-L with the Red Cross even if you’re not a nursing student:

Human Resource students assist their local Red Cross chapter with organizing welcome/informational sessions for new volunteers.

Education majors can participate in leading preparedness education workshops in local elementary schools.

Marketing and Journalism students participate in volunteer recognition events and write articles for the chapter’s website.

Public Health and Med students participate in the Home Fire Campaign and other preparedness/resiliency activities in their communities.

Theater/Drama students create and present disaster preparedness skits for students in local schools.

The American Red Cross currently has many Academic Service-Learning partnerships with colleges and universities nationwide and examples are listed below. Although the Red Cross cannot endorse any institute of higher learning, the partnerships to serve communities are greatly appreciated.
