Former Northern Ireland keeper Roy Carroll has left champions Linfield after not being offered a new contract.

The 41-year-old, who is still recovering from a serious knee injury he sustained in January, joined the Windsor Park club in 2016.

Carroll's exit was reported on Wednesday morning and the club have now confirmed his departure.

"I want to thank Roy for his excellent service, leadership, hard work and dedication," said manager David Healy.

"He will and should be remembered as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Irish league and Northern Ireland history," Healy told the Linfield website.

"It's never easy when big characters and players of the quality Roy possess have to, or choose to leave, but for the long term, myself as the manager, has to make decisions for the future of the football club."

Carroll helped Linfield secure the Irish Premiership title in his first campaign and won another league medal this season despite the premature end to his campaign in January.

The former Manchester United, West Ham, Rangers and Olympiacos player told the Belfast Telegraph that he intends to continue his career.
