- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025I’m so happy I found this. I’ll never let it go.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2009You're likely to hear a lot of criticism for this show, and with good reason: People often become frustrated when faced with things they don't understand -- and it certainly doesn't help that the show is purposely abrasive, with unlikeable characters, a million sight gags/puns/lines hitting you a second, and the worst "art style" imaginable.
However, the abrasiveness is part of the humor, and that's PFFR's whole thing (look at Wonder Showzen or some of their music): Alienate people as quickly as possible so you can leave the people truly for looking beyond the surface to find brilliant, unique art. And with Xavier, what you have is a show not for the masses at all -- and certainly not for the typical Adult Swim set. This is a total work of GENIUS, and I don't throw that word around very often.
Surreal, bizarre, seemingly-100% nonsensical at times... but so, SO unbelievably consistently hilarious, intelligent, and clever. Have you seen a television show lately that you could describe as "mindblowing"? Probably not. Well, this is your show. It's probably way too intelligent for the average Adult Swim viewer... hell, it's probably way too intelligent even for the people who enjoy the show! There's ALWAYS some new line to pick up on. I've watched some episodes 10 times and still catch new things. It's hard to describe in detail how absolutely INSANE this show is!
But if you're the typical Adult Swim fan, you may want to pass on this one... however, if you're into the films of Lynch, Giuseppe Andrews, Jodorowsky, etc. or the music of The Residents, Harry Partch, Captain Beefheart... you know, the truly bizarre and "outside" part of the entertainment world... you will most likely love this exploration of existentialism and absurdity. This show is probably the most insanely and violently brilliant thing on television. Ever. So unbelievably packed with sight gags and clever quips, an 11 minute episode has more energy and ideas than entire seasons of pretty much every other show you can think of.
Never have I seen an animated series explore these themes. It attempts so much with what little it has. It's not random at all... one little line has layers and layers of depth. I'll admit it's probably a bit hard to take at first (as any truly groundbreaking art is), but remember that it's just a show that makes fun of the dangers of spirituality. With that in mind, you should be able to see the beauty. Personally, I think this is without question the most brilliant thing I've seen in forever, and I've fallen so hard in love for it that it's ridiculous. I've actually TURNED ON MY TELEVISION lately, just to watch this show. Will most people like it? Probably not. But if you want something truly unlike anything you've ever seen, get this immediately.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2009This show is nothing short of amazing. The people who created this are clever writers, appealing to an intelligent viewer by delivering what those who don't quite understand it think is absurd and unfunny. The truth is, it's anything but.
This is an intentionally poorly animated, comedically fast-paced glimpse into the twisted, surreal world of Xavier, an aesthetically (not to mention morally) objectionable wanderer (and wonderer), with delusions of philosophical grandeur. As Xavier lands himself in situations born almost completely out of his twisted incompetence and inability to reason, he attempts to further understand himself and nearly always fails.
Comedically, this is a real gem. The attention to detail elevates this from a 'weird cartoon' to something that has very obviously had a lot of thought and care invested in it. The show has many layers, from odd almost dream-like logic to the beyond-impressive word play, to the conveyance of some very intelligent ideas and concepts (which unlike South Park, for instance, it doesn't always turn into the main focus of the show). It's a show that can move dramatically in completely unexpected directions, often from just a turn of phrase or an internal after-thought. In that way it's very similar to Wonder Showzen (from the same creators, PFFR), but Xavier takes the surreal humour to a whole different level! I'm loathe to say "if you don't like it, you don't get it" about comedy shows because it's invariably a cop out from a proper justification, but some of the criticism this show tends to get is as a result of aspects (deliberately dubious animation, consciously offensive stereotypes, etc.) that the creators intentionally set out to exaggerate, pervert, satirise and mock. There's often a very tangible commentary on social responsibility to the sub-text and in amongst it's absurdity lies some occasionally deep stuff, apparently lost on it's critics.
In summary, I haven't been this excited about a comedy show since, well, Wonder Showzen.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018The first time I saw Xavier: Renegade Angel was on the adult swim midnight to 2am block, a television segment relegated to shows like 12oz Mouse, Squidbillies, Metalocalypse, Tom goes the The Mayor, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Perfect Hair Forever. What separates Xavier from it's compatriot shows however is the fact that A) It's entirely in CGI and B) the show only upheld the appearance of absurdity while continually discussing topics of Nihilism, Post-Modernism, Religion, Identity, Politics and modern life all at the same time whilst mixing its message with psychedelic imagery. The show combines these two notions, the logical and the psychedelic, with an unbelievably adroit skill and flare, creating something that is simultaneously pointing you to look at a primary message snapping it's fingers in your ear to distract you with marvelous imagery and comedy. Ultimately I believe that XRA is an underrated program, though it does have it's die-hard fans who continue to promulgate its message and images throughout the internet, myself among them. If you must buy any of the former or current Adult Swim shows in DVD format, I suggest you drop the coinage on Xavier: Renegade Angel. It is by no means a perfect series but one definitely worth your while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Xavier Renegade Angel changed my life. I think.
Without a doubt the single greatest animated creation to be aired on television (so far)... A dark yet uplifting insight into the vulnerable human mind and ego through the entity of Xavier, a lost soul on the path to enlightenment and understanding, to answer the one question that has been puzzling humanity since we had time to sit around and think about ourselves and the universe too much: "What doth life?"
At times making existence seem clearer than day and at all other times downright confusing, this show confronts and challenges pretty much every aspect of modern day human interaction before mercilessly tearing it to pieces through satire and wisecracking puns firing out of the TV at an overwhelming rate, faster than any viewer can fully take in. At times you'll be laughing and crying at the same time and you won't even be able to remember why. What even is it? Is it even a comedy? Well, yes, But also no: It's a new age bible. No normal human could have created something so utterly perfect. Vernon Chatman, John Lee and the rest of the PFFR Team are nothing short of artistic geniuses. This is an essential for any comedy fan, cartoon/animation fan, or indeed anybody who thinks too deeply about things or feels the need to find their place in the world today. Hell, I might stock up on copies to hand out at the mall and preach the word of PFFR.
Have given five stars but the aspect ratio with the DVD is a bit weird; for example, the DVD menu is the size of the screen but the actual episodes are a bit smaller. Not a biggy though. Definitely better than watching it on Adult Swim and definitely worth having a copy in the house in case of emergencies...

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger: May cause damage to your sides
This series is completely nuts, and you'll love every second of it. Xavier is some kind of... wierd thingy... who "rambles" the world trying to help people in need (and usually makes things a million times worse.) The animation is like the Sims or Second Life (life, life, life) and the things Xavier says will rupture your spleen from the laughter. Get. This. DVD. Right. Now.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's great... Works only DVD region 1 though
It is region-locked. Aside from that it is an amazing series with nonsensical, world-class
comedic writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure to watch clips online before
The humour in this show is as twisted as the main character looks. I would suggest this for 4channer and Goons. Most of the rest of the human race might be offended by it. That being said, this show is incredible. Every time I rewatch it, I see new jokes and make new connection. The jokes debit is very high. Plus there are 2 seasons here for a ridiculous price. One of my ebst buys 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this, Chomsky honks!
Surreality? Faux-philosophical insight? More jokes in each ten minute episode than most shows manage in an entire season? These are all many questions you may ask yourself as you ponder the great mysteries of life. If you are seeking answers, you will not find them here, but you may find yourself one step closer to enlightenment... or cosmic oblivion? You decide.
Xavier is a freak-beast wandering spirit who was solely responsible for the death of his parents as a young boy, starting a house fire when meditating surrounded by candles in his bedroom. Asking his dying father who was responsible, he misheard his reply "our son" as "arson", and set out on a quest to avenge their deaths and help others along the way.
Unfortunately, Xavier is a very malicious creature, following years of abuse from everyone including classmates, parents, teachers and even the vicar. With this ingrained into his twisted soul, he sees opportunities in all the wrong places and simply irritates those he encounters to the point where they beat him to a pulp. This happens often. Frustrated and spiteful, Xavier then goes about acting revenge and ruining the lives of those he once sought to help. Most episodes end in universal destruction, or a similar theme of things being massively cosmically imbalanced as a result of Xavier's horrible behaviour.
This show is quite simply huge. The philosophical ponderings, wordplay, voice acting and animation are all honed to a fantastic end result to form a show that is often difficult to watch more than three episodes in a row, such is the sheer weight of surreal humour and often violent or repulsively offensive scenes. Not light viewing whatsoever despite only being ten minutes per episode, this is quite clearly the pinnacle of the Adult Swim network in both style and content.
It's utterly insane, but also one of the most rational excuses for a television show I've ever seen. Totally unlike anything you will have ever seen before!
