EA and MGM Bond

EA never says die in its new partnership with MGM.

MGM Interactive and Electronic Arts just bonded at the hip, so to speak. That's right, EA, the biggest gobbler of other game companies, and MGM, which owns major movie and intellectual property rights, are now working together to bring you games ¿ together.

The move for most gamers is slight, if noticeable at all. What you'll see is that Electronic Arts will now have its name on games like Tomorrow Never Dies, and the upcoming Rollerball.

What just went on behind the scenes is that EA is now a co-developer and publisher with MGM. EA will now distribute, market and handle all sales for MGM, and it has a heavy hand in development, too. EA has a major say in the green-light stage of development, in which EA's producers can send it back to the drawing board or approve it with changes specified by EA, an MGM representative told IGNPSX today.

"Joining forces not only enables us to tap into Electronic Arts' well-respected creative resources, but it presents us with the best possible marketing and distribution team to support our global objectives," said David Bishop, president of MGM Home Entertainment in a statement issued today. "This partnership with Electronic Arts provides us with a strategic edge over other available choices in retail market penetration, which will certainly help cultivate MGM's brand awareness in the interactive arena as we launch an innovative and ambitious new slate of game titles."

Electronic Arts president and COO, John Riccitiello, added: "We are pleased to enter into this alliance and to be part of such a promising venture. The proven value of MGM's properties, combined with our world-class sales and distribution infrastructure, positions these forthcoming titles to captivate the interest of game-players worldwide."

MGM offers gameplayers an impressive portfolio of titles. Other upcoming releases include the action title "Rollerball," based on the futuristic sport in the hit cult film of the same name, and "Too Human," the sophisticated action-adventure game in which an undercover police officer enters the world of corporate espionage in the year 2450 to investigate the death of a fellow officer.

Chalk another one up for EA.
